    Default Input wanted

about a week ago I planted a small 1/4 acre plot of prograze by evolved habitats. it has started to grow and is about 2 inches already. I went and picked up some 10-10-10 fertilizer for it, is that the right fertiizer to use?, will it be ok?

and also there are some weeds and grass growing in it due to I was to stupid and didnt spay it with round up, will this cause any problems?, how can I fix it?

any input you guys have would be awsome, thanks a lot

I am not familiar with that product. You may want to consult with Evolved Habitat on that one. However, with any food plot, you should take a soil sample prior to planting. The soil sample will tell you exactly what you need to do to the soil to get the product growing properly. Tripple 10 is a good all purpose fertilizer but if your soil sample were to call for higher numbers, you wont be maximizing your plot.

Again, contact Evolved Habitat as to what you can spray, if anything, to help with your grass and broadleaf problem.

thanks, im not really looking for much in the plot right now, just some fair growth, this fall im going to plant it better like rototill it, spray it, lime it, fertilize it, and have plenty of seed. I just planted this for fun to see what kind of resuts I could get with minimal work.

Not familiar with prograze either. Bet Todd will have some good informative tips for you here.

Best to call the seed company, for sure.

Just remember.......nitrogen makes the weeds grow 3 times faster (or so it seems) than the plot mix. A future soil sample test is definitely in order for you.

I told you to plant that mix in the fall

The mix contains brassicas, perennial clovers, and chicory.

If you have access to a brush hog then you could mow the plot to knock down the weeds. The brassicas may get knocked down also a bit but several forum members have mowed brassicas and said they responded fine.

If you are having problem with grasses you can spray a grass killer such as Poast and it will not harm your plot plants. As far as spraying for broadleaf weeds you can spray 2,4DB (make sure it has the B)---this will kill all your annual broadleaf weeds but will also kill your brassicas--but will spare your clover and chicory.

As far as the triple 10 fertilizer---it's fine but remember your also fertilizing the weeds also.

    best of luck

Sorry to say but I would turn the plot over, wait a few days, spray it with herbicide, and do it properly. From what you have said you plan on doing it right eventually anyway. Why not now? Selective herbicides will kill grasses or broadleafs, so if you select one you are going to kill off part of your plot anyway. Unless you select Roundup ready seed for planting you are at risk of killing what you plant.

I see what your saying but this was just a trial plot or a plot just to see what happens, this is my second year of planting. and I cant afford to go and spend a lot on food plots, so When I replant it this fall I will be sure to do things the right way but for now the plot was just for fun and to see what happens. I planted a techomate monster mix in april and it is over a foot tall, and its planted in the woods and all I did was take a steel rake and work the ground a little, thats it, so although it helps to do all the expensive stuff on the plots, its not always needed, thats all im saying, I cant afford to spend a lot of money on a food plot that will be replanted this fall.
