    Default Stubbornness Pays (pics)

Well I had my mind set on having some food plots at my dads place for this year but with the wet weather we couldn't get the tractor into where we needed it. So after looking it over my dad said that I should probably just forget about it for this year and hopefully next year we could get it done. Normally I would have probably went along with that but I just had it set in my mind that I would find a way to get this done. I knew that it would end up being alot of hard work and that I would probably have to settle for something less than I originally wanted but I was going to do something

Heres an aerial of my dads with the green marked for where I wanted the plots...

Heres the back plot before I got started (the white X is where my stand will be)...

Here it is after a swathed (?) all the grass and rasberry bushes down by hand and raked it all. Then I was able to get my lawn tractor back and get it down the rest of the way. The biggest problem with this spot was the sun, there is a hickory grove on the east and a few trees on the west that block the sun, so...

Here it is with the trees to the west cut down (still have one to go) so that the plot will get plenty of sunlight...

I also swathed and raked the second plot and mowed it down with the mower...

The extremely good news is we haven't got any of the rain that we expected this last week so as long as it doesn't rain tonight my dad said it looks like it might be dry enough to get the tractor through. So hopefully tomorrow I'll have the last tree on plot 1 cut down and then we'll be able to till all the land up and get it ready to plant.

I'm a happy person right now.

Dads place isn't that big and is just a pass through. There isn't a ton of deer movement through there but there are plenty of deer around the area. My goal for these plots is to attract a few deer in during the late season when things get cold and it ends up being the only standing crops around. I know the deer will pass through there during the rut and hopefully they'll remember where the easy food is and take the short walk from the big woods to the northeast of my dads when the weather gets bad.

If not I'm sure I'll end up busting some pheasants and rabbits out of there

Food plots are a lot of work but fun. It makes you feel like you are caonected to deer hunting year round. Looks great, good luck getting it tilled and planted.
