    Default Just Sitting There

Anyone else in the midwest experiencing their soy beans not progressing?

My beans germinated a couple weeks ago, and since then, about half of them have gotten to the 4 or 5 leaf stage, the other ones are just sitting there stagnating.

The seed was not innoculated, and I guess that's the reason why they're not taking off.

    Any ideas?

BTW--my corn was a complete failure. Got too wet and cold, seed rotted I think. I will replant that soon.

Dont know Chris. Have not planted any soybeans, but in the garden, our lima beans are doing better so far than ever before. Our purple hull peas(cowpeas) are also doing just fine. Cut up and sprayed round up on two of our plots I plan on planting a mixture of lablab plus and cowpeas in. Will probably plant that sometime next week.

Our sweet corn is doing quite well.

My sweet corn is doing fine. Need to fertilize the one plot, and the last plot has just broken ground. Green beans and Limas are doing well too, which is a miracle with all the rabbits running around.

The area I chose for the food plot is a pretty wet area, maybe that's part of the problem.

Our cowpeas are in the most moist part of garden, they are doing just fine. The popcorn is about 4 inches tall now, my sweet corn is about 3-4 feet tall, mostly taller in the middle of the rows. Do the coons and deer bother the popcorn much?

Been having some troubles with rabbits as well.

Nope. The ears are so small, and so high up, I never had a problem with that William. The real enemy of that popcorn is the wind. Make sure you thin the seedlings to 1 to every 5" or so, otherwise the stalks get too spindly, and a stiff wind will knock them over.

That stuff sure is shooting up Chris. Took the kids out a while ago, and that popcorn is probably closer to 7 to 8 inches tall now. We planted them about 4-5 inches apart at planting, well tried to anyways . Nicole, my helper, had some spots where three or four seeds were together, but at least she helped.

i never innoculate my annual spring legumes (cowpeas/soybeans) and I've never had that problem. However--since you didn't innoculate I'd toss some nitrogen down.

Yep, some help is better than no help. Just thin them. Trust me, you want to thin them with extreme predjudice.

    Thanks for the suggestion Todd.

Could it be the weather & drought? I have a 5 acre soybean field that was planted mid May and they haven't taken off yet because May was a really dry month.

Actually, it's been wet. Unusually cold for spells too.

It may bepossible that the cooler weather may slow em down a bit too Chris.

I just went back and checked them, and believe it or not, I think they're going backwards.

Kind of sounds like my early(sweet) peas. I kind of gave up on them. They got off to a good start, then we had way above normal temps and they slowed down.
