    Default need info

Hello im trying my first food plot on my hunting property this year. The area i have to plant is the uphill side of a pond. The soil is mostly clay and rocks so there isnt much to work with. I do have access to an array of farm equipment, just mostly wondering what product you guys would reccomend for these conditions. Im willing to lime and fertilize after taking a soil sample, as im sure it will be necessary with such poor soil. I do know that crops will grow here because there are crops all over the farm, with a soybean field not 10 yards away from the area i have to plant

Depends really on what you are wanting to plant(perenial or annual) and what your goals are. Is it going to be a hunting plot or a feeding plot.

I prefer to plant my perenials in the fall. I plant annuals in the summer and then overseed them with wheat, oats or rye in the fall. Will be experimenting with overseeding with brassicas mixed in this fall.

Have had good results from clovers, best results with fall plantings. Hamannfarms has some good clover/trefoil blends, I am also a big fan of pennington seed blends. For a fall annual, a brassicas would be a good choice. Like I said it really depends on what types of goals you have for the plot.

alright sorry i forgot to specify....this will not really be a hunting plot just a feeding plot...and i dont really care if its annual or perennial because im mostly experimenting...so mostly just something i can plant late that has high levels of protein and such.

i would not mess with growned that has alot of clay in it because the plants grow better in a area that has good soil with no rocks or clay becuse it is hard for the roots to brack throught the clay.
    i know from experince

Chicory is very drought resistant due to it's deep root system. Being on a hill side and sandy soil you will experience a drought like situation from the rapid drainage. Plus the Chicory will give you the high protein you are looking for, at around 20% or more.

You will need to drill the chicory to insure a good stand. Broadcasting will work, but with varying results.
