    Default Planting Wheat Question

Hey y'all, I have been giving some thought into turning an old road into a narrow, long food plot, and I have a few questions regarding the planting. I was thinking about planting the road in wheat, just something to stop a deer when crossing the road--not as a major food source. Anyways, I was wondering, what would be the best way to plant the wheat? Rake away leaves before broadcasting? Rake ground after broadcasting to get a little dirt on top of seed? If you were planting wheat, what would you do?

I planted wheat for erosion control along with wintergrazer rye on some trails going down hills leading to my plots back about a month ago. Got the soil prepped well then broadcast just before a rain.

Defcon, you are describing a good way to get clover or similar small seed to take...it takes a bit more prep to get the wheat to germinate well...but if you were to prep it like that and then get a good rain, you could have some good success.

Now, does your road get 4-6 hours of sun?

Hey Thayer, good to hear from you. Have seen your posts on the QDMA forums.
Preparation is Key to planting. Seed to soil contact is one of the most important ingredients to food plot success. Clean the soil as bare as possible so the seed can get to it.

I had Good luck planting small plots into oats exactly the way you are describing and had very good luck, but I planted it heavy. "The Book" says grains should be planted about 1" deep, I think, so if you can get some type of planter, that might help lessen the amount of lost seed.

A long, narrow foodplot is a great way to go, and grains are the thing to plant this late in the year. . . good luck!!

I just disced and dragged my wheat plots for prep, could use a tiller if you have one.

Sewed my wheat and rye mix into a firm seed bed and covered with a bit of hay on the hillsides to keep it from washing just before it rained. The seed on more level ground was never covered and is doing fine other than what the turkeys have scratched.
