    Default dry and bare plot?

This small plot my son and I planted in an opening in a pin oak grove was barely coming up(probably the rape)but since we haven't had much rain it is dry and bare now.I'm thinking about roughing it up with a rake and throwing some rape, turnip and wheat seed on it again. Will the old seed on top of the ground not germinate and grow now?

It probably will grow some. Sometimes Mother Nature can be cruel. If the plot isn't too big you might try watering it. Just a simple thing like a hand held sprayer can do wonders. I don't know what you consider small, but look around for a way to get a little moisture on your plot.
Moisture here has not been an issue lately. Last evening they got over 14" of snow less than 150 miles west of here. That was in Buffalo N.Y. They are predicting some snow here this weekend, perhaps we will be lucky and not get too much.

I wish it would snow here and get rid of the mosquitoes.
This plot is maybe 25'x50' and is just a small opening in the pin oaks that we cleared and raked. The river is not 50 yards away but it would be hard climbing the steep bank with buckets of water but we may have to try it.
I'll look to see if we have a 2 gallon sprayer.

Good luck with the plots. Hope you guys get some moisture over that way.

Snow would be nice here too. Had our first frost here Thursday night, the mosquitoes were worse Friday afternoon after the wind died down than they were the past few time I have been.

its hard to grow anything without moisture, even if you do everything else right. My fall plots are not half of what they should be either from lack of rain.

this late in the season you might have a little better luck planting rye grain. It will grow in cooler weather better than most of your food plot choices.

I'll check with Stillwater Milling for the rye grain.

Stillwater Milling found me some rye grain seed from a seed store in Collinsville.
Do you guys think it's too late to plant clover and chicory?

Dont know about planting clover and chickory there this late. I prefer fall plantings for them, but cannot remember ever planting this late.

sooner--as dry as it has been I wouldn't spend the money or time on clover and chicory--especially this late in the season.

While it was raining today I spread some rye grain, rape, turnip seed plus some Tecomate standside on the small plot.I hope it comes up good before we get some cold weather. We are supposed to get some more rain tonight and tomorrow then on tuesday it's supposed to be 81 degrees.

This rain might have saved my plots that were already up,they looked good today.
I'm sorry to hear about your plots.
My cousin lives near Ponca City and he said his yard was brown,he claimed that area had missed what few rains we received the past 2-3 months.

This rain might have saved my plots. They were starting to yellow, parts of them are toast, but hopefully the biggest part of them will survive.

Living up here at least I don't have to worry about whether anything will grow now. IT WON'T...
We have had a couple of killing frosts which have put most plants to sleep. The brassicas must be getting sweeter as the deer are starting to hit them more and more. The clover is getting more attention also.
Good luck to you westerners and southerners as your growing season continues.
I sure hope you do get that much needed rain!
