those are some nice lookin' turnips.
Thank you dogdoc, They're mighty tasty also!![]()
Some monster sized turnips there.
WOW!!!
What is the recomended pH for that mix??? I've got a spot for some next year, but I think the soil is a little acid.
Great looking turnips there. Have your deer been hitting them at all yet? Mine seem to have avoided them so far, just wondering if everyone else is having the same results. maybe its still a little too early for them to be hitting the turnips.

WI--they usually hit the greens after your first good freeze. As far as the actual turnip the deer around here usually don't start eating them until very late winter when most available forage is gone--during years with big acorn crops they usually don't touch the actual turnip.

We have had a couple hard frosts. The deer are really hammering them now. They don't eat the turnip much until the greens are pretty much gone.
Last year we had turnips up until early February. The deer dug through the snow to get to them. This was a good food source well into winter.
Our soil test came back just over neutral this past spring. The brassicas did well, however I know of some folks who have had good success with P.H. levels around 6.5.
There is virtually no maintenance once the seed is planted. We try to get ours in 45 to 50 days before the first anticipated frost. Normal maturity is 45 days from planting.
Have only had a few light frosts here so far and the deer are already hitting my winter mix from hamann farms. A mix of purple tops, sugar beets, brassicas, and rape.

Tell my wife that! She has mentioned the turnip to some neighbors and they all want some.
I'm thinking about closing the shop and becoming a turnip farmer.
I've never heard a turnip complain!![]()

We also have some " whitetail Secret Spot " planted. We have noticed the deer have devoured the rape and turnip in it. It was planted a little later than the Shot Plot, hence it may have been more tender yet.
Now we are considering planting a couple plots a week then two weeks later as an experiment.
We are also going to look at some other brands as well. We have had good luck with Shot Plot but if there are other mixes out there we are willing to give them a try.
Dogdoc seems to like Hamann Farms mix. We will try it and compare it to what we have had in the past.
I never want to get hung up on one mix. The only way to know is to try others.
If the deer liked Imperial's brassica in Secret spot so much, maybe they would like the Winter Greens mix too.
