    Default Are you the same????

I've always wondered if other landowners feel the same way I do. I occasionally get invited to go deer hunting with friends/clients to some nice spots here in Oklahoma. However, if I have a day off or a weekend off I'd much rather go hunting on my own land then someone elses land or lease. I know I should think--heck go kill a deer on someone elses land let yours walk but 90% of the satisfaction is knowing I harvested a nice buck on MY land that I had something to do with the size/quality of that buck. I guess I've reached a point in my life where just going to a place that has no meaning to me and hunt just doesn't have as much satisfaction as hunting my own place.

    Anyone else feel the same?

    What a good, meaningful question.
By all means, I prefer to hunt the land My son, wife and other family members have worked so hard on.
Even if we wern't to harvest a monster buck, we still have the satisfaction we have improved the feed and habitat for our deer.
We also have had a lease for the past ten years which we also have worked hard at. We share the lease with some close hunting partners. We enjoy the company and good times.
Maybe you could call us lucky but we set our priorities to buy the land instead of a big boat, fancy cars, expensive vacations or other luxuries. It was a family decision. We now have a place all of us can enjoy and share the wealth in.

Yes, I do feel the same way. About the only thing I like better than harvesting deer on land I have improved is allowing someone else to take one on our land. We do, however, have a hunt that we do each Thanksgiving on another person's property; we have taken a deer 4 years in a row there, and I have been fortunate enough to be the shooter 3 of the 4 times , so I have to say I look forward to that hunt each year.

Well Todd, I have a few farms I have permission to hunt, but I usually hunt landowner and just stay right here behind the house, although I did end up getting my license so I could hunt the woods on the farm beside us this year. I like being able to walk to my stands. I think it is a little more satisfying seeing the deer on our land and taking deer where we have worked to try to improve. Only thing more satisfying to me than taking a deer off of my land myself is seeing my wife or kids excitement when they go and either kill a deer or see good movement. Unfortunately with our situation right now the deer are getting so much pressure around us that we have not been seeing any deer .

I don't like to spread my self to thin. I have 3 differtent spots that I use. I try to not to over hunt them as well. One spot is only an afternoon feeding area, one is best for morning, the other is good anytime. I will usualy hunt hard fo spacific bucks in these locals and feel if I don't stay persistant I will have missed an opertunity.

My deer still need a few years before they are shooters for professionals like you guys . To the best of my knowledge, there should be 3 2 1/2 yr olds and one at least 3 1/2 by next year, if they come back .

I kinda know how you feel Todd, and I don't even own my own land.
I've/we've been hunting the same properties for over 15 years now, and you kind of get attached to that specific deer population. We've been practising our own QDM and it's starting to pay off.
Weird year this year, with the deer going nocturnal for no good reason, but I got some good picture before the season started and know what's there. It just gets me so excited to see what next year will bring, and what those smaller guys we saw and passed on this year, will look like the next year and the next year. It's all pretty dang exciting, and adds a whole new dimension to hunting.
