Corn planting problem solved

Well after listening to what you guys had to say I decided that in order to be truly successful at planting corn we needed to make sure and get a corn planter. My friend who is a John Deere salesman was at one of his customers farms and found just what I was looking to buy. He found a John Deere 494-A corn planter. The owner of the corn planter had completely restored the corn planter, and I mean restored everything and even repainted it. The thing looks brand new. He replaced all the fertilizer parts which are usually the bad parts in a corn planter. THe nice thing about the fertilizer hoppers is they are stinless stell so there is NO corrosion on them. He invested over 1000 dollars in just parts for the machine, which is more than we paid for it. When we picked this planter up he gave us a truck load of stuff. If you look at the pictures many of the new parts are not on the planter yet they are in the back of the pickup truck. He bought it all just did not put them on. After a saturday of putting this together we are going to be ready to plant corn the right way. He even gave us a second corn planter for parts which my father is going to pick up today. We have the box full of plates to plant soybeans and corn and I am not sure what else. He even gave us three bags of corn with the planter.

The best part of this deal is that my friend that sells equipment says the if we end up wanting to get rid of it someday we could easily double our money for the price we bought it for. It is all about being in the right place at the right time and having cash in hand I guess.

ANother nice thing is we have all new parts schematics and a user guide which will really help in learning how to use this.

That thing is cool!! I've never seen something like that. It looks like it will work great!! I'm glad you found it. I'd imagine that will save you money in no time planting your own crop instead of hiring a farmer to do it for ya. If you ever decide that it is too big, I have a two row planter. Maybe we can trade!!

that will do you good..I used to have a 495 JD it worked great. make sure you thouroghly clean the fertilyzer hoppers and lighty oil all parts that has contact with it. I used old motor oil, it left a film. take out the fertilyzer augers and take them apart and clean and oil. make sure you assemble them EXACTLY the same as they came apart. Each auger belaongs in only the right or left box..otherwise they will run backwards and not apply fert...I know trust me!!..LOL

HAHA sounds like a man with experience, we will take extra special care of this as we do not want to have to buy another one any time soon. We usually high pressure wash our 3 point hitch fertilizer spreader when we use that so I think we will do the same for this and also keep everything oiled and greased so that it does not rot away or seaze up. I guess if we have questions as we get into this you might be the guy to talk to

wow--looks like you got a great deal. When it comes to planting and growing corn direct all your questions to Oneida man (martin)--that is his specialty. I tried to grow corn by just broadcasting and lightly cover with very limited success. I probably don't use enough nitrogen with it--my best corn crop came from under my bird/squirrel feeder. Had one of those bird seed molassis blocks and a few pieces of corn that fell into the flower garden sprouted and grew some beautiful corn.

Well, there you go brian! If you had bought molassis blocks and buried them you wouldn't have had to spend the money you were going to use to buy Jen her valentine's day gift. LOL

AHHHH she does not care, she does not say much when I bring that kind of stuff home, now if we were broke it would be a little different.... actually I just checked my wallett, maybe we are broke haha. Hope she wants corn seed for valentines day
