Cover scents.

Does anybody have any experience with cover scents? I wash my clothes with DDW or Scent A Way, store them in a plastic container, spray down before heading to my stand. I will be hunting in a blind on the edge of a soybean field this year and think a cover scent will help a little. Only problem is that I am reading alot online that cover scents really don't cover your scent, but just give deer something else to smell along with the hunter. The soybean field is right off of pines, but I am thinking earth scent should work well anywhere.

I usually just break off some pine branches and rub them all over me before I walk in maybe even keep one in the blind with me...i don't know if I'm crazy for doing this but that's what I do

I usually put earth scent wafers in with my plastic tub so that it does smell like dirt. I knew guys who hunted by cow pastures that would put cow poop in they're plastic tub with they're clothes

...only if you're getting pine pitch/sap all over you when you do it. lol

the deer will still make out your scent mixed in with the other cover scents. you might get an extra couple seconds before it registers everything it's smelling.

i used to put my clothes in a big ziploc bag with pine needles, leaves, or stuff in the bottom. wore the HS scent wafers too. it worked a little i think, but i still got busted if the wind was wrong. whatever cover scent you use, should be what's in the area you hunt.

Would think if there are pines around, a pine cover scent would work well for you.

Keep my clothes in plastic totes, we have cedars all over our property, I have in the past taken fresh cut cedar limbs and lined my totes with them. That said, have caught myself wondering why I was spraying with scent away before walking to the stand if my clothes smelled like a cedar tree. For years been saying I was going to build a cedar closet to store our hunting clothes in.

Far as the reply above on cow poo, I have killed a few decent deer after walking through piles on the way to my stand, pretty natural odor around here.

If I'm in a blind with only the window in front of me open, will the wind still carry my scent or will it go around the blind?

it will go around the blind to an extent but some of it will carry your scent.

This area is mainly piney woods and so this is my routine.

I wash my clothes in HS detergent and hang them outside to dry. After they have dried I'll pluck a bunch of pine needles off of the pine trees. Layer the bottom of the plastic container with the pine needles, place clothes on top, another layer of needles, more clothes, another layer of needles....you see where this is going. Place the clothes in pairs so you don't have to dig down and mess up the bottom layers of needles and clothes, just take whats on top.

I use DDW, or will also wash in cold water and baking soda, hanging out to dry is the best way by far. Have a short little clothes line at the camp, when I get back in, I'll hang my shirt/jacket/pants (or whatever outerwear depending on weather) on the little line to air out in the breeze.

Pine limbs and wax myrtles are my go-to trees around here for cover scent. Spray on some DDW or your fav cover scent also before getting in the woods. I don't like "scented" products, except maybe earth scent that smells just like dirt.

I think keeping scent down is largely a matter of common sense. Be mindful of what you eat/drink, don't sweat if possible, don't have that fruity scent crap hanging from your rear view mirror etc, lol.

I use the baking soda product with the hanger in my totes. It takes away all scent. I'll use the scent away spray for my bow, hat, gloves and the underarms/legs. I then use raccoon urine for cover on the tree or brush I am hunting in. I used to use the pines and cedar branches, but I don't always hunt in places where they exist. Those smells get very heavy the longer in the tub and I believe the deer pick up on that as unnatural. Keeping it all clean is the key. Realize too, Leathers hold a lot of nasty smells from perspiration. Stay away from using leather wallets and belts as well as leather wrist slings on your bow

Deer can smell between 5 to 7 scents separately at one time. Cover scents simply cannot work.

I keep a small spray bottle of scent killer in my pack and spray down before walking in, and after I get in my stand. Also use coon or Fox scent on my boots.

like mentioned above, keep clothes clean by washing in scent control detergent ( I always spray down the inside of washer & dryer to get as much "soapy/dryer sheet" smell killed off as possible, and right into zip loc tote bags with some type of wafer

nothing is sure fire, and yes you will still get busted on occasion
