In Alabama, a store owner cannot display a sign or ad that has the word "Beer." Next time you are in the state, take a look around. You will see a lot of "Cold Beverages" signs. Just one of those laws that have stuck for quite some time down in the Bible Belt. TR

There are lots of laws that seem to make very little sense. In the fall PA turkey season my .300 Win. Mag. is a perfectly legal weapon to use. #2 shot in your 12ga. will get you arrested. Go figger.......

And count me in as one of the "nut cases" who will shoot a snake (ANY snake) on sight. Period.

There are lots of weird laws here. For instance, its against the law to tie a giraffe to a lightpole here...now, where am i supposed to put my giraffe when i am walking him and i go in a store???? there are more dumb ones like that all across the country

To me it sounds like PETA has been working with your legislaters trying to save all there precious animals. They are vegetarians so they don't care about your livestock. They probably also just think "who cares. it isn't me so it doesn't matter to me" whenever they see someone get attacked by the dog or snake they are saving.

I would kill a dog only if I had to. Snakes I love and will also only kill if I have to. It should be up to the person to decide rather or not to kill something attacking them or something like that. Not the law. I'm not saying it should be up to the person on how many animals of a certain kind they can kill on each hunt. Those need laws. But with the other things, they may as well just say
'who cares."

Here's some food for thought...Since dogs are considered property and don't have rights...if the dog is on your property ( and possesion is 9/10 of the law ), don't you have the right to detroy "your" own property?

If the dog is in my yard and is posing an immediate threat to me my family or my property (say he is fighting with my dog) I will try at all costs to avoid killing him. I will spray him with a hose, beat him upside the head with a stick, chunk a big rock at him, etc. If he persists, I will dispatch him rather quickly with a .22 bullet. As for snakes, I am trying to end my fear of them....hopefully one day I will be able to see a snake in my yard and just walk around him and not kill it.

in chicago, it is illegal for a horse to sleep in a bathtub.

also in chicago, it is illegal for a person to dance naked in presence of a horse.

We have spent the last three yrs trying to
fix a dog problem.We have several horses,some old,some real young ones,and
one with a permanet sore foot. This pack of
dogs,7, was running the horses on a regular
basis. We talked with the owners first. One
fellow claimed 3 as his,the other 4 lived
next to him but that person said her son
had left the 4.One put his up,the other did
not.Later date called animal control.Said they could try to trap strays.they can't be trapped.called back they told us we could
protect our own property.Had animal control
tell these people we were going to shoot the
dogs. They put them up until he left. Can't
shoot at 7 dogs running 10 horses in a
circle.Finally called sheriffs office.They came
out and told them they would have to pay
the vet bills on any horse that had been
injured from the constant running from
their dogs. They did keep them up awhile.I
am glad to say I'd didn't kill one dog.But
hubby killed 2 and the neighbors across the
road got 3.Still have a dog problem,they
kept 3 from the last litter and have another
litter now.Anyway it has got to be the owners
fault.We have 6 dogs,5 that are registered
pitbull.I have had this breed 26 of my 36
yrs.I have never allowed my dogs to run
loose. They are leased in public, and either
stay in house or are kenneled when at home.We own over 70 acres and our dogs
do not run it freely. Why should the renters
next door let theirs run it?As for the snakes
we killed 13 copperhead under our cabin.I
have been relocating kingsnakes to the
same area for the last 4 yrs.Seen the first
copperhead this yr,a young 18 ".I think the
kingsnakes are working. Yeah, the laws are
funny, but I think for the most part they
work.

I would hate to take a dogs life, but if property or my childs life is in danger, then its gonna happen. I would really have a heart to heart with the neigbors, maybe even buy them a gift certificate to a nice restaurant or Wal mart for their family, as an "incentive" to pay better attention to the dogs. If my dog damages property, I pay for it...if the item was 20.00 I give the person 40.00 and apologize. You get more bees with honey then vinegar. Best of luck with the dog issue. As far as the snakes, if they dont bother me, I dont bother them.........take care, interesting posts....there are strange laws out there I will agree....................................AL

I am not agreeing or disagreeing with your decision to kill poisonous snakes, but I would like to answer you question on why they are protected with another question.

Should the bald eagle have been protected? Should the passenger pigeon have been protected? American Bison?

Look at whitetail deer and wild turkey. Both species were hunted to near nonexistence in many states. Only by meaningful legislation and protection (Many states banned turkey and deer hunting all together) were these species able to survive and repopulate native ranges. The key is MEANINGFUL legislation coupled with a sense of responsibility to properly protect and manage species.

My experience in the field is that there are many different opinions and interests in all types of wildlife - PETA, hunters, birdwatchers, snake lovers, etc.. As managers we are responsible for protecting as many of those interests as possible. As stewards of the resource sportsmen are charged with the same duty as well.

Remember: The attitude that you harbor towards venomous snakes is the same attitude some people held (and still do hold) towards eagles, bison, grizzly bears, deer, etc. If there were no laws in place to protect and properly manage these species they might not be here today for us to enjoy and hunt.

Grizzly bears, moose, deer, mice (lyme disease and Hanta virus carriers), nearly all species of birds (West Nile virus carries), mountain lions, and bees (for those who are allergic) are only a few of the species that can in your words "...Cause potential harm to us." Does this mean we should get rid of them too?

As for domestic dogs causing harm or damage to person or property - that is a whole other story.

Both of you make good points. Bow_hunter1 I am not advocating that we simply stand by and allow ourselves, our children, or any other human being to be attacked or mauled by wild animals (although I will admit I would love to see a PETA member or 2 tossed around some by a bear). However the threat that a wild animal posses to our safety is minimal in most cases. Remember that snake, bear, hog, or whatever is not coming into your yard with the hopes of killing you.

Unfortunately you might find yourself in trouble if you indiscriminently kill a protected species without just cause. That is not my law, but it is the law in many states. I never worked in an enforcement capacity, so my hands would be tied anyway.

parker_supermagnum, I do not think that Bow_hunter1 needs to stay out of the woods. We all put different values on wildlife. There are some who value snakes over deer or toads over moose. He has a valid opinion and a right to that opinion. He should not have to change his attitude or feelings to enjoy the outdoors.

As long as we, as sportsmen, recognize and respect other people's values in wildlife we avoid any mud slinging from those who have differing values on hunting and wildlife. If we only value and respect the species that we hunt then we set ourselves up to be "Bad Guys" who simply want to kill.

I agree with you... There is a lot of middle ground. The problem arises when people, for whatever reason, begin to think that their middle ground is more important than some one else's. That only breeds contempt. The extreme attitude of "... venomous snakes (or bears, deer etc) are useless" is just as harmful as the attitude of "... all animals are precious and deserve equal rights".

Decisions made from either one of those extremes is of little benefit to wildlife, hunters, the public at large, or the wise stewardship and conservation of our natural resources.

Me I'd hit the 'possum. A dead 'possum vs. $500+ damage to my truck... Then again if I did not drive a Chevy I wouldn't have to worry about the ditch! haha

Dogs are are a completely different issue and there should be common sense laws regarding them.

I am glad that the people who are making management decisions regarding our wildlife do not have a similiar attitude to your's.

Once again I know people who believe that bears "... serve absolutely no purpose." good thing those people are not the ones managing the resource.

Wildlife values are different for everyone but what always confuses me are the people who put a lesser value on a particular species and fail to recognize that some one else might have a high wildlife value for that very same species. It's almost like saying "Well since I don't see any use for them no one else should.".

In all my expereince working with wildlife including alligators, snakes, bears, coyotes, insects, birds (game and nongame), sturgeon, salmon, and mice and hunting/fishing many of these same species I have never seen it fit to kill any of them simply because they seem "useless".

You have an interesting perspective, I don't agree with it, but it is interesting.
