Default Are teachers and parents doing their job?

I just read a post in another room and OMG. Do kids and soon to be adults not know how to spell or write anymore? Geez Louise. I won't say where this was but I could tell they were teenagers. I can't even stand to read some of the posts because of the horrible spelling. It's even hard to tell what is being conveyed when the spelling is so bad. I'm not sorry to ask how much are people going to overlook to just keep kids in school and get them graduated? Some people will do anything to get the numbers to justify the government financing. Just ticks me off to see people not even care to communicate correctly with the rest of the world when it was so stressed in my time in school. I don't always type perfectly but dang it I at least try.

Yeah, it's scary and sad. Typos are going to happen occasionally, but some of these posts are unreadable.

I'm hoping they are just lazy and not unable to spell.

Trust me I know 1st hand. I teach 5th grade. Spelling and grammar are HORRIBLE. They dont know what a subject or verb is. THey cant write complete sentences either. We practice it every single day of the school year. They get it from 1st grade on. They write every single day. We have spelling test every week. We use only the common mis-spelled words. Children dont care because their parents dont care is one problem. I dont want this to sound bad but the kids are getting more non smart. I guess that is the kind way to put it. Like my old principal use to say "You can't make chicken salad our of chicken sh_ _"

See that is why they cant spell. They are getting it from their teacher.

We could carry this one on for a very long time...but when it comes down to it, the parents is where the problem is. It is their job to check on Jonny, make sure he is doing his work, and if he is not retaining it, than they have to make adjustments accordingly. Yes, we do lack enough good teachers that care, but they do NOT carry the blame. No i'm not a teacher just a concerned parent.

I know that the core subjects in our school (NY) are very frustrated. They are forced to teach curriculum based on standardized tests and not necessarily the basic skills.

You also have to remember that know one corrects a child in their free time when on-line or on cell phones. Their IM/text messaging laguage is based on bad grammer and misspelled words. A kid can spend an hour doing his/her homework. Then when they are done they wash away everything they learned by spending two hours text messaging or IMing a friend.

I can lead a child to water but I cannot make them drink if there is soda pop waiting for them on the cell phone.

    Good point, Joe.

The shortcuts the kids all take on IM and text messenging can't help.

And, I certainly don't blame the teachers.

Know what you mean, I will be the first to admit I have typos, but some of the grammar and spelling I too have noticed is pretty bad. Longer posts I will usually cheat and hit the spellcheck before submitting. Think unfortunately that some kids do get shuffled through the system still.

Had scheduled pt conferences at both our older 2 daughters schools just last night and feel that the teachers our kids have this year are really good.

No doubt parents and teachers need to work together for kids to achieve their full potential.

If a post isn't "readable" (is that even a word?) I just skip it and go on to another post....

i think we all spelled adn typed good enuff for all of everybody's to not say nuthin about it two bad.

j/k, i agree completely. besides the occasional shortcut of words and not typing with caps because my shift key is a little tricky, i do my best to always spell and talk correctly. i go to a small private college and you'd be amazed at the kids that can't even write a complete sentence without some error somewhere. text messaging is another reason they are getting so bad... 'what r u doin 2nite?' that's how most kids write it out now. my pet peeve, 'fully educated' people who don't know the difference between to, too, and two, there, their and they're, or know and no.

I don,t use spell checker in my posts i just wait for the next poster who tells me how it should be spelled. And they do. Now i will wait and see if and what is wrong with this post. They should put a new room on this site... spelling and grammar topics: spelling, adjectives and adverbs, and complex and compound sentences I don,t care about compound sentences...its compound bows that i came on here to read about.

Most of you know I'm a high school business teacher. On any given day, I'm proofreading 50 pages of text.

I don't think it's as bad as you think. Most kids do OK. Most of the kids do as well or better than some adults in this forum, but don't get me started.

I can tell you that kids have they're own way of typing and it is a different language unto themselves, but it derived from texting each other, and using chats a lot. They use a lot of shortcuts.
