    Default Robins Nest

I didn't think Robins nested this late, but apparently they do...

I was sitting on the deck today and just enjoying the nice weather, when I noticed this Robin intentley flying to and from my Flowering Crab Tree, for over an hour....

So I figured I would check out was she thought was so interesting.... Well I found out she has a nest in it with these three items in it as well.....

Now I now why she was so avidily checking on things... ,, I'm 5'11" and the nest is about my shoulder heigth off the ground so getting a picture was easy,,, but it will be the last for awhile,, I don't want to disturb her anymore than needed.. but I thought is was very cool...

When they hatch I'll try to get a couple pics before I leave them alone for good....

    Hope you enjoy the picture...

    Pretty cool.

Yeah, I think the nest multiple times a year. They're all over the place out here. I hit a discarded egg with the mower yesterday, and I saw another one in a flower garden just this morning.

I wasn't aware of this.... I even checked out some bird books my folks have, but they didn't go into the nesting end of things....

You have to love the way nature works tho,,,, and watching this nest for the next few weeks should be interesting.....

I came across a robins nest yesterday as well. But the two chicks in it had already hatched and were sitting in the next with their beaks open and looking up at the sky waiting for momma to drop in some worms. This was at our friends barn.

    Found this:

    [ QUOTE ]
An American Robin can produce three successful broods in one year. On average, though, only 40 percent of nests successfully produce young. Only 25 percent of those fledged young survive to November. From that point on, about half of the robins alive in any year will make it to the next. Despite the fact that a lucky robin can live to be 14 years old, the entire population turns over on average every six years.

    [/ QUOTE ]
