Some photos with Canon's S3 IS

I'm really impressed with the capabilities of Canon's Powershot S series with Image Stabilization. I recommend these cameras all the time to folks and this is why. The following photos were all taken with the S3 IS.

Axis Kabobs

Kudu Horn Curl

Watusi (frame capture from video mode can your camera do that?)

Jake Close up

Gobbler Impact (another frame capture this one captures the shot hitting the gobbler.)

Four Leaf Clover (Macro shot)

Nice pics Leo, and your cam is a good cam no question about that. Would venture to say though that there are several cams in the same category on the market that are capable of shooting video, capturing frames from about any video can be done with software on a pc. Some cams do also have the ability to shoot video and take pics at the same time.

Shot video on minidv of my 5 year olds graduation ceremony just this morning and took several photos to a memory stick while rolling tape simultaneously, but that is a camcorder and is a little different. Anyhoo, nice pics.

It's true several digital cameras take video clips. However, the field of competitors narrows substantially when you are looking for video that is 640x480 pixels at 30fps with stereo wind filtered sound. The Canon also allows you to take photos while you are filming. If you are looking for a camera that does both video and stills, pay attention to this specification.

those are some great shots. Canon gets enough of my money every year with my collection of IS lenses. i will have to look at that camera.

You will be glad you did PA. Once you realize the value of Image stabilization at higher zoom powers you simply don't want to be without it. Then it also becomes apparent it's a helpful feature for Macro Shots.

Unfortunately I've noticed with Canon SLRs the image stabilization feature seems to only be built into the lenses. Honestly I don't know if that is just a Canon thing. But for Canon SLRs that means unless you buy lenses with the feature, you don't have it. As you've discovered that makes collecting lenses rather expensive. The Powershot S series has image stabilization built into the body of the camera which means it's always available. Even during video clip recording. Image stabilization during video recording makes a major difference. Video recording is still the function where IMHO this camera is a major sleeper.

Minolta, and I am pretty sure sony dslr's utilize a similar type stabilization, but the body on the minolta 5D is supposed to utilize the anti shake feature with any normal lenses. Being that all I have is normal lenses for my old slr at this point, makes it kind of nice to still be able to utilize this feature.

Minolta is no longer in the Camera business. They make components but not cameras.

Sony purchased the rights to Minolta's Image Stabilization (IS) technology and have apparently improved upon it.

You're right the IS is in the body of the Sony® α (alpha) DSLR-A100H Camera. So it may indeed be a Canon thing.

You are correct Leo, Sony is selling the cameras under their brand, been that way for a little while now, but those cams aside from taking the memory stick media are pretty well in my opinion still basically minolta cams even though they have the sony name on them. Konica Minolta has discontinued all their digital cameras and from what I understand has not been in the camera manufacturing business since sony picked it up, but I think minolta is still producing lenses and there are a lot of minolta cams out there with the anti shake feature that were sold prior to Sony acquiring konica minoltas camera division, think that took place sometime in 2006 if I am not mistaken.

Not sure about Nikon cams and how their image stabilization system works, sure someone here knows.
