Smile Came across this at my grandma's!

I was up at the lake for the long weekend, she has a small plantation of redpines right between the resort and the road. I went walking through there over the weekend and almost stepped on this mallard on her nest. I literally got 2 feet from her before I noticed her. She didn't move a muscle. Didn't seem to be nervous or anything which surprised me, guess she was just protecting her eggs. I did go back another time when she was off the nest and there is 13 eggs in it, I'd imagine they'll be hatching sometime this week.

That's cool Shaun. I ran across a ,mallard nest like that once up on top of an old stump, that was on a pretty steep embankment about 100 yids from the river. It's amazing sometimes, where those critters decide to build.

I wouldn't swear to it, and I'll probably catch heat from muggs, but I don't think that's a mallard. Looks more like a blue winged teal.

Mallards have an orange or yellow patch on their bill, and look at the feathers on the back, mallards are much more mottled.

    Good pic/find either way, eh?
Don't cry because it's over, smile because you were there.
