By the way, that hay is for our horses. We bring the horses in every night and the deer take over. Just saying so we can avoid the baiting debates that take place every now and then.

Very common for deer to come in and eat food put out for livestock.......But would the DNR/authorities/law think that same way if for some reason they saw you hunting near that or someone had an axe to grind with you?? I really have no clue...just would hate to see you get in trouble

If it is illegal to hunt over bait, where you're at, then that hay pile is illegal to hunt over, regardless of what it was originally placed there for.
That's something we have to be very careful of here, because it is legal to bait deer, but illegal to bait bears. So if someone was to shoot a bear over a deer bait pile, it is illegal, because the bait was placed there, by human hands to attract or feed, whatever.

I would be very careful about hunting over that hay also............if you are in the CWD zone all it would take is for a warden to see your blind and stake out the spot and bust you for baiting(even though I realize your not)................I would follow their trail back to the timber and hang a stand there and get in early tomorrow afternoon......that way you can't be accused of anything

amazing how the northern deer will eat from hay piles but the deer around my area won't touch a bale of alfalfa hay. I bet they would be some good eating deer. You need to find the main trail leading to that hay pile and set up on it.

I beleive you can hunt over the hay as long as it was put there for "agriculture purposes"..for feeding horses or livestock...Id check with the local warden first to be sure.

LOL, funny how that works isnt it Todd. Have watched deer eat from the field where I cut hay plenty of times and had them eat it after it is cut and even after it is raked, but have never seen deer around here eat hay from bales.
