    Default Wildlife Photography Question

I just ordered a canon rebel xti camera and was wondering what would be the best lense for photoing deer and elk at a long distance without having to take out a loan.
    Thanks,

What do you consider long distance?

But you are looking at spending some bucks on a good lense.

You can take longer shots without spending a fortune on a lens. Not sure the mp's on your cam, but would think a good quality 300 mm lens could probably easily get you by at 100 yards. For my minolta I have a 70-210 mm zoom, I was looking at adorama a while back and had considered tele converters, but decided I was going to wait until I could buy a better lens.

You could buy gray market and get a decent long distance lens for a couple hundred bucks. Or you could get a knock off brand. I'm thinking about getting this one for my sony...

I read an article on these knock offs in American Photo and they are actually pretty decent. Obviously some are manual and lack the bells and whistles, but for someone just starting out, why not...You could buy a decent used truck for what some of these name brand lenses cost. I don't put a whole lot of stock in marketing schemes of these products. After all, some of the greatest pictures ever taken were taken while somebody was holding up a flash bulb or had a sheet over their head.

Kinda like archery...People and animals have been getting killed for centuries with a stick and string. Now we have 9 gabillion dollar bow setups. Not that i'm complaining. Just comparing the two marketing wise.
