Buck, doe and a hawk...

My first buck I've got a pic of this year..

Down the ridge from the buck

And while fishing at the lake last weekend , had a hawk come circling around overhead and the crows were pestering it. Pics are all backlit - but I thought the light shining thru the feathers was kinda neat..
I think its a Coopers hawk but I didn't really look it up. - Tominater, would you know?

Love the overheads!

Definitely a buteo there, not an accipiter. How big was it in comparison to the crows?

If it was noticeably bigger than the crows it was a red shouldered hawk. If it was about the same size I'd say it was a broad winged hawk.

Looks dark phase, either way. I'd like to see the top of him.

Thanks Tominater - it was definately bigger than the crows.
I think you're right on it being a Red Shouldered from what pics I've seen. I would have loved to have got a good pic of it's back but all of them were right underneath him into the sunlight.

Hawks are almost as troublesome as sparrows. They can vary in color phases quite a bit. Some have wide white bands on their tails, some narrow. Then there's the whole issue of juvenile/juvie to adult/adult plummage. Pretty tough to ID even if you're right in front of them sometimes.
