Physically Challenged Sportsmen

I'm a physically challenged hunter. I'm a paraplegic. Fortunately, WV allows paraplegics to get a free permit to hunt from a vehicle as long as it's at least 30' off a road, there is no one else in the vehicle, & the vehicle isn't running. I've been deer hunting since 1981 & I've killed 25 deer so far. My biggest is an 8 point with a 16.5" inside spread

Great to have ya aboard! Congrats on the deer! I just had my ankle refused again but Im not fully challenged (except maybe in the head).

Glad to have you. I have two buddies who are in wheelchairs and have been for nearly 25 years. They kill some dandy bucks and both have P&Ys with their crossbows. Anyone can do it if they want to.

congrats on some good hunting and deer. lots of states allow similar. in wyoming, you can even leave the truck running. you can hunt with others and just need a permit, issued at a doctors request, to shoot even from lots of roads. any road but state, county or federal highways and all farm roads.

Welcome & Great to have you hear and able to hunt! Don't ever let it slow you down. I know how hard it can be to stay upbeat & so do you, as you have been dealing with it for far longer than I, but keep an I eye on the forums and keep encouraging others to get out there. We all need to help each other find ways to stay in the game!

i hate to hear about your dissability, I would let anyone with one hunt my spot. Glad you can still hunt with Gods will we can do anything!

I just joined this site today, and I'm pleased to see that there's a Forum like this.

I was born with only one hand, I have my arm, it just stops at my wrist. Also, I have nerve damage from brain surgery.
I've tried target shooting, (with my son's air rifle

) and after about 10 minutes, I feel like I'm dying. Not sure if it's because I can't support the gun with my left hand, or if it's just my nerves. I also get him to pump it for me, which takes the fun out of it.
I don't want a gun that has the kick of a bull, so I've just stuck with his for now... .

Any suggestions for a gun for me?

Hello fellas
I to use a wheelchair to get around and hunt.
I am a SCI(spinal cord injury) and a Amputee L leg.
Just 5 yrs now. I've hunted 51 yrs out of 56 I been here on this ole earth.

Its a little tuffer now, and we have to work alot harder at it
but it makes all the work worth while.
I also run rabbits with beagles. So before some one jumps me
for being a dogger, rabbits are all I run.

Im a still hunter, cant no longer climb but a ground blind works for me. I use a lifted golf cart to get me in and out of the woods. Its electric, super quite and I have slepted right on deer feeding before and they never new I was there till
they smelled me .

Guy's put in for some of the Disabled Hunts that become
available each year, Look up your DNR they should be able to tell you more about these hunts.
If you cant find out any info that way contact me by email or PM and I'll help you if I can.

Hey Beagle,

I've been on the youngsters threads and threads about working with your kids, teaching them how to hunt... but that's a little difficult for me when I haven't got the same abilities. I try working with my boys, but I can't just hand them a gun and say "Have at it!"
What do you think of having my children involved with me at a handicapped sportsmens club?

If they are old enough , get them in a Hunter Safety Education coarse. They will learn or they will not pass the coarse to get a licience to hunt .

In many many states its Now Required by Law
And Go with them , you to can always learn.
Its also a great way to team up as a father and son deal ...
Take them along to the handicap sportsmens club, the more they can
learn the better off they will be. Dont know if its the nerve damage
causing you the dificulty in holding a gun up or not, I really cant say.
But if you ever get to where you can, There are Hunts called
1 arm Dove Hunts where people just like yourself only have the use of one arm
or only have 1 arm . That would be great for you to get involved with others
that know exactly where your comming from like these fellas, take your boys along also ...

Hello, I have a friend in Texas who is an avid hunter. He recently became a paraplegic when he was hit in the head by a falling tree. He was in a coma and intensive care for 3 months and is now living in a nursing home. He is going thru intensive re-hab and dreams about bow hunting again! Does anybody know of any organizations in Texas that would assist him in getting back in the field? I live in Michigan, and have no real knowledge of Texas hunting or organizations. Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks, Gary
