So, Karl Rove is “in trouble” for leaking the name of a CIA operative to the press. Anyone interested in exactly how that came about? Well here it is.
Seems that Joseph (I couldn’t find a cookie in a Keebler factory) Wilson had just written his erroneous article for the NY Times on the Niger/yellow cake/Iraq WMD connection. Naturally, since he got the facts all wrong and was accusing the Whitehouse of making things up, Rove and several others decided to go on the offensive and let the public (through the press) know just how horrible a job Wilson did on his investigation. Matt Cooper, from the NY Times, contacted Rove for more information on Wilson as Rove was about to leave on vacation. During a two minute off the record conversation with Cooper, Rove made a statement that neither Vice President Dick Cheney nor CIA Director George Tenet had picked Wilson for the trip; "it was, Karl Rove said, Wilson’s wife, who apparently works at the agency on WMD issues who authorized the trip." So there you have it. From that the reporter deduced that Wilson’s wife, Valerie Plame worked for the Central Intelligence Agency.
Never mind that the real wrong doers here are Wilson and Plame, the press and the Democrats are after Rove’s scalp.
BTW – According to an Amicus Brief filed in the case by the NY Times, Washington Post and 29 other news agencies, no laws were broken by Rove’s actions.
