I think the pay cuts are necessary....40$ is a pretty drastic cut though if ya ask me. I do see his point about other aspects of the auto industry. It does seem the laborers have been targeted in this whole deal. Personally I think he scewed the UAW when he was so unwilling to compromise on the first round of talks. So I guess now they will have to live with that once these cuts take place. I'm really curious as to what the autoworks pay scale is when it's broken down?

$30 something an hour pay cut or no job...this is a no brainer. You're right though Kat. Had they been a little more willing, things may not have gone as far as they did. There are multiple people at fault here, and the laborers are not really being unfairly targeted. You can bet that while the big wigs in that company are going to walk out of this still comfortable to the extent most of us will never feel or see, they are doing so with a little "butt" pain. The stockholders and Congress will certainly (hopefully) not let them get away with nothing but a slap on the wrist. That however, is something that the elite of this country will more than likely never allow us to see simply because of the trust issues with the public.

One thing I have learned in the military is that many times you have to assume and rely on senior leadership doing what they are supposed to do when it comes to discipline. It will happen behind closed doors, and you might never find out what happened to that person. This is the same scenario. It is very rare that a member of any senior leadership position will have his punishment advertised before the pee-on's. At least officially by the military. However, the media will find out and blast it out.

Either way...we may never know. Lots of losers in this situation, the biggest being the faith of the American consumer.

here's the real problem that needs to be corrected. the UAW always talks about it's employees. well, there are 98,000 employees working in the auto industry. BUT, what they never do mention is that there are over 1.1 million folks that the auto workers have to pay. you know, the laid off workers who get 95% of their full pay for staying home, the retired workers who get 90% of their full pay, the widows/ widowers who get paid, etc. the UAW always tries to make it look like the poor worker gets hit all the time. fact is, there are just too many non workers on the band wagon who make too much for doing nothing... the unions have dug themselves into a deep hole, and one which the american car buyer will no longer pay for them to get out of. and let's not forget the "bonus's" of the big boys in the companies. we need to cut them out, also. and take away the keys for their $20,000.00 per hour jets!

Steve I couldn't agree more with that. The jet thing was just insulting personally. I don't know how the UAW works, but I do know that I pay in to the IUOE union that I belong to each paycheck for my pension that I'm elgible for in 5 years. Not sure if that is the 90% pay your reffering to in the post above. If it is, these folks earned what they are recieving cause they paid it in to the union each week. If it is not, then thats crazy!

I didn't really think the jet thing was insulting. Honestly, I expected nothing less. CEO's travel on corporate jets bottom line, and that money more than likely comes out of a different pot that the company has set up. The amount of money that CEO's use to travel is not even a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of money needed to bail their butts out. It's like spending a nickel to get a $1000. Driving down was just a publicity stunt, and in no way changed my opinion of what they need to do. They were going to get money from us either way. No matter if they took the QE II all the way to D.C., and flew back on the Concorde. As much as I wanted it to fail and teach everyone involved a tough lesson, I had in the back of my mind that it wasn't going to.

Did they stay at a Motel 6 and pack a sandwich on the way over? I doubt it. Nobody complained about that. At least that I saw. They could have driven a Prius down, but ultimately they are going to end up back in their multi-million dollar homes, drive their luxury cars to work, and vacation in their multi-million dollar beach house. Which they took the corporate jet to because it is part of a "perks" package given to the CEO from the company. To me, the whole private jet thing just added unnecessary controversy into a public viewpoint that THRIVES on controversy and completely took people's minds off the task at hand. Had one of the CEO's been cheating on their wife with an 18 year old college intern, it would have captured more media attention than the bailout or what caused the need for it. Heck, I even fell for it for a little while, but when I wanted answers, all I got was travel arrangements, hence it became unimportant.

So what do we do as citizens paying the price for this? We play politics. Pay close attention to these bailout packages and how the money is being spent. Any mismanagement should be advertised worldwide. Read on the news today that many people don't know where the money is going and how it is being managed. Also heard from a Democrat spokesperson that if the dems screw this up, they will have nobody else to blame, and the voters will determine the outcome of elected officials careers. All I can say is in 4 years we better have more to point fingers at than private jets. Keep your eyes open and watch the fallout. Or watch "out" for the fallout.
