Is on t.v. right now selling Commemorative Barack Obama coin sets. 4 for $19.95, with one of them being a $1 gold coin with Obama's face on the back with George Washington. I'm rushing to the phone...not.

I don't know. I'm seeing more and more garbage being pushed onto the market these days. Sort of cheapens the office if you ask me. I personally don't know how one could compare Obama to Washington in the first place.

I've only seen a select few Presidents have anything made in their honor, and the majority if not all have been AFTER they LEFT office, not before they even got in!!!

I've seen it also. I think we better get used to the love affair with BHO or learn to change the channel.
He is already being lauded as a great president.
Those coins are not a US Mint item, that is just some company making coins looking to cash in.

i think it's great, myself. we have entrepreneurs making all kinds of coins, plates, statues and more, all with the obama likeness. they are making millions, and will be paying taxes on their earnings. if someone is fool enough to buy that junk, so be it. w.c. fields said "there is a sucker born every minute". we just have a plethora of suckers out there supporting free enterprise. in 5 years they will be landfill...

    PT Barnum said that, Steve.

WC Fields said, "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bull----" which certainly applies in this regard!

Like it or not, it's a historic moment. That's the "why" end.

And, to help you guys understand a little more, if I had lived my entire life in a nation that only had black leaders, I'd be pretty pumped to see a white guy elected...even if he was only half white. That's the "try to see it from someone elses' perspective" end.

And applying today's liberal/democrat standards, you'd be called a racist for thinking that.

They were actually running the coins around the time the election was held or very shortly thereafter, my oldest daughter pointed it out to me and my wife on a channel on directv.

Eric is right, it is a historic moment in the sense of the first president that has not been white. I have no problems at all with a black president or a woman president or even a black woman president. I do think in that regard our country has shown that some are truly beyond racism, however I think it is safe to say that many people voted race on both sides rather than voting issues which tells me racism is still not gone away.

A bit pre mature I think for them to be selling coins with his mug, but like posted above this country was established on free enterprise and if those folks want to spend their money on these coins more power to them that is their right.

On a bit of a side note I think it is quite apparent that the media already is in a sense setting Obama up in a way that no matter what he does he will be portrayed in a positive light and unfortunately many people will have a tough time seeing through the smoke. Never in my short lifetime can I recall so much said about how bad it is for an incoming administration. The man was elected to do a job, it has gotten quite old hearing about the hurdles(complaints) that current administration has left for Obama to have to overcome, most the issues afterall were well known well before he decided to run, if it was going to be too tough maybe he should not have run. I think it in poor management and poor leadership to put so much negative attention on your predecessor rather than bringing positive ideas to what has to be done. Really does not set a very positive tone for the direction you plan.

I agree with you about the fact that regardless of his performance, a large section of the population will always sing his praises...

But, that said, outside of FDR, this poor guy is coming into a huge mess. I'm not saying all of it was brought on by the Bush administration, some of it just has to do with the current climate of today's global ideals, but you're kidding yourself if you don't blame the Bush Admin for a great deal of it.

I would tend to agree with Mike here Eric. It is very unfortunate in my opinion that there is such a double standard on race. We get our news out of Memphis, and I hate to turn it on the local news at times, Memphis is not too far off of Chicago in my opinion with its corruption and crime. Right now probably about 60 percent of the coverage on our local channel that we watch seems to be about the incoming president and the inauguration and some of what I have been hearing is kind of troubling. Been seeing a few interviews with field reporters talking with folks in the Memphis area and of those people that they interview the response I have heard over and over is that they are excited to see the first "African-American" president. I have not once heard any interviewees say that they were excited about what they expect Obama to do to head this country in the right direction. That in mind, it is not too hard to see why voting turned out the way it did and I think it is quite sad that probably a good number of people did not educate themselves and vote the issues, but instead voted on that sole premise. That seems to me like it could be construed as racism.

Some of the comments too about the inauguration and the amount of focus on the subject seems unusual too, I do not recall anywhere remotely close to this type of attention when any other presidents have been inaugurated.
