    Default Hunting new land!

I recently got permisson to hunt 300 acres. The land consists of one big field, which the deer use alot in the afternoon. Most of the land is woods though, which is a really steep mountain, well it's steep for Southern Kentucky. What would be the best way to go about hunting this for the first time, and how do I find where the deer are moving at?

Without knowing wind directions and other things like water source, food source, bedding areas, stuff like that, I would try still hunting my way to the edge of that field and watch for does. With the rut starting, hunt the does, and the bucks will show. Good way to start finding where the deer like to travel... look for travel routes and rub lines and such.

Another approach would be to set up from a high vantage point overlooking the area with binoculars or a spotting scope and watch the activity for a few days.

It has worked well for me in the past. Good luck.

Thaks for the help! I hunted it this afternoon for the first time. The wind is great, its blowing across the field away from the mountain where they come down. I climbed up a tree about 20 yards from the field, and the deer came down the hill about 50 yards to the right of me. I caught the first glimpse of them when I saw them jumping the fence to get into the field. There were 4 does and 1 smaller (not a shooter) buck.

Sounds like a damn pretty parcel of land...don't forget to locate the water/food source these deer are using. Find the food and you will be on that big boy in no time!! Good luck!

Thanks once again guys for the help! I set in a good place where I could watch most of the fields, and I there was an abundance of acorns all around me. I killed my buck right before it got dark this afternoon. He wasn't the biggest buck in the world, but he sure made me happy, and it was a real exciting hunt.

    Look for saddles.

If you could post a topo we could provide more suggestions.

He is not a monster but he's only my 5th buck. I believe it's time to start waiting for a bigger one from now on.

congratulations on the buck. had i been around, i'd have told you to ask the farmer (landowner) where he sees the most or biggest deer. they know for sure.

He is an older guy, that can't see or hear real well. The only thing he could tell me was that he saw alot of deer cross the road at night, so that led me to believe that they were coming out right at dark and going across the road to the cornfields.

Make sure you get you some Trophy Blend Scent to use, I have been using it for three years and it works!

I just got permisson on a new piece of land. It's about 50 acres of woods, and a big cornfield. The deer come to the cornfield every afternoon. Yesterday afternoon I spooked off 1 doe, and this afternoon I had 3 does and 1 buck wind me. Do you think this will affect them from coming back to the spot? If not then what should I do?
