I thought about gettin a bore sighter, but I have found that with practice you can get on paper by eyeballing through the bore and then looking in the scope. This of course only works on guns where you have an unobstructed view of the bore through the rear of the action or single shot barrels opened from the action. I place the gun securely on the front and rear rests and remove the bolt and center the target in the bore. Raise your head up and without moving the gun, adjust the scope and/or mount to get the scope centered on the target. My best to date was 2" off. Typically, I can get within 4" of zero.

My wife's uncle bought a new rifle several years ago the week before deer season. It was a Rem 7400. I asked him how it shot. He said that he didn't shoot it yet(3 days into deer season). I stated my displeasure of him hunting with an unsighted rifle. He stated that they sighted in at the gun shop. I told him that was bore sighting and was just designed to get him on paper so he could make the final adjustments. He scoffed at me and went back hunting. Later that day a big buck came out about 150 yards away and he empties his gun not touching a hair.

We sighted it in and found it was just under 3 ft high at a 100 yards.

I can't figure out why he missed that buck .

I have a bore sighter that I use on my own rifles when I mount scopes. It will only get me on paper most of the time at 100 yards. The height usually comes close to what I want, but I usually am 4-6" to the right. It does what it is intended to do but these things are no substitute for actual range time.
