It's Official..... I want an AR.

Don't have a good reason other than I can't quit thinking about owning one. That's really all the reason I need.

Here's what I want

Flat Top
16" Barrel
6 position collapsable stock
About 300 linear feet of picatinny rail
3 or 4 30rnd mags.

Under $900...... preferably way under...

I know I'm dreaming on the price, but If I could get ahold of one that looks just like the Smith & Wesson M&P15T I'd be sooooooo satisfied.

What brands should I look for, and what ones should I avoid.

I picked up a bushmaster for under 800, I had bushmaster in the Military so I know to trust this brand. The down side of the AR is that it bring the Gas into the Breach, this means lots of cleaning, any body been in the Army/Marine corps will tell you that. I some time had to clean my rifle 2-3 times a day. There is a version of the AR I know bushmaster make one, which is piston driven, that the one to get, but it cost more.

Got a rock river varmint model here with a 20 inch barrel. Been very happy with it. Might check with RB Precision on their prices, they can get hard to get rifles and have good pricing.

Rethink the 16 inch barrel. They are EXTREMELY loud. I'd never go under 20". Believe me 4" makes a big difference.

As you described the AR of your dreams, it is tech a CAR (carbine).

I bought a DPMS CAR (minus about 299ft of rail ). It came with a case, 2 30rnd mags, cleaning kit and a few other things. If I recall it was in the $640 range.

I built (really assembled) a similar gun in 6.8SPC. They are incredibly easy to piece together. It was also a CAR. Cost about $500 but didn't include mags, case etc.

Do they make 5 or 10rd magazines for AR's. I ask because I believe in WI they have a maximum of how many rounds our hunting guns can hold (8 I think), but don't quote me. Also think it would be nice having a smaller mag. for going through the woods.

Yes you can buy them in 5, 10, 20, 30, and even 40 rnd configurations.

I thought the same thing but I researched it and there is not a limit on mag size here in WI.

I picked up a Stag Arms lower a few weeks ago and I paid $249+tax. I'm sure you can do better outside of NY. You can also buy the upper without paperwork and shop it real good. Start with the receiver and go from there. That will require a 4473 to fill out at your gun dealer. Uppers can be bought online and thru the mail and can go from $400-$1500.
