Bullet help

I am having trouble deciding what kind of bullet i want for my .270 WSM -- I don't reload since im in college and don't have the time or equipment available.

This November i will be with my dad in the mountains hunting elk, and we will be using my 270 wsm because my dad's .300 was stolen 2 weeks ago.

I also plan to do alot of deer hunting this season too and think the 150gr. bullets should be fine for both seasons.

I was shopping around as best i could and found several good bullets custom made on this website:

The bullets found there are fairly expensive but they're pretty top notch.

I hear all these great things about the Barnes TSX bullets but fowling is an issue? I just need some in depth help.

I was leaning toward the 150gr. TSX, but maybe i should wait for the XP3's?

Ya, its just that me being a poor college kid currently, its not easy to experiment on a box that will cost me 45 bucks.

One question, my gun is pretty darned new, ive only shot 1 box of shells, and ive heard i need to shot 3-4 more boxes to get the barrel set or something. Is this right?

My .300 WSM loves the Winchester Supreme Ballistic tips, I shoot 180gr. They shoot awesome out of my BLR. Usually run me about $35 CDN/box, so probably a touch cheaper in the US.

I really like the TSX in my .300. I haven't noticed anymore fouling than any other bullet. Barnes says that they foul less than other bullets. I have not shot any XP3's so I really can't compare the two.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Barnes. Everyone I've heard from that shoots them gets better accuracy and you won't have any penetration problems even on an Elk.

Do a search on "barrel" or "break" on this forum and you'll find a lot of info and opinions on barrel break in. AJ doesn't seem to think it matters, while others have some pretty elaborate procedures.

As far as trying ammo to see what your rifle likes without breaking the bank, some swear by the Remington Core Lokts. I've had good luck with Federal Premium - the Vital Shocks are more pricey than the Power Shocks. Also the Federal Fusions perform well and are priced reasonably.
