    Default New Rifle

I just picked up a Ruger M77 Mark II in 30.06 with a Bushnell Elite 3200 Firefly scope. This is my first centerfire rifle ever so I am very psyched!!!

A local gun club is actually having a sighting in event next weekend, so I plan on taking out on Sunday.

I'll be shooting Remington Core-Lokt 250 grain bullets to sight in. Any recommendations on a good hunting round? I was thinking maybe Winchester Silvertip or Accubond or maybe something from Hornady.

    Thoughts?

Good deal on the new gun!! Always warms a feller's heart to get a new gun.

I believe you meant to say "150 grain" Core-lokts........they don't make a 250 grainer for the '06. If the Core lokts shoot well for you....take 'em hunting!! I'd personally opt for a 165 or 180 grain in the '06. But 150's will be fine too. IMHO.......there's not too many compelling reasons to spend over $20 for a box of deer ammo. There are a few......but not many. I can think of NO reasons to need a controlled expansion 30 caliber bullet for deer.

Oops! That was suppose to be 150 grain.

Nice looking rifle Harv. Have to agree with Strut here, if the gun like the core lokts, use them to hunt with. Use 150 grain core lokts here with a .270 and that round has never let me down.

Did you get a copy of the Free Silent Rain jacket offer by Buschnell with your purchase?

Congrats on the new gun, .30-06 is a great choice! I would definately recommend 165-180 grain for deer. It's a devastating load. Winchester Silvertips or Remington Core-Lokts either one are good bullets for that gun.

When I used my '06 for deer, I handloaded my shells with the 165 grain, Hornady Interbonds! They shoot great and will penetrate very good!

You could use either the 150 or 165 grain Interbonds for deer and they will work just fine!

I use 180 grain bullets for everything----elk, mtn goat, bighorns, mulies, antelope & whitetail. Right now I'm using 180 grain Hornady Spire Points with the "interlock ring". Good bullet. But in the past I've used both Win PP & Rem Core-lokt-----I like both of these in the old "round-nose" version. See if your Ruger like 180's, 165's or 150's--------then go hunting. Good Luck---CB

Had a really good time at the range. The gun shoots great and is zero'ed in at 100 yards. I also took several shots on the running deer target. That was a lot of fun! Now I can't wait to get it out in the woods and get a nice deer in my scope.

Check out these shells from Cabela's. I ordered a box for my new .308 Tikka.
