I had a problem with a 7mm Mag. on an elk a few years ago. I shot it about 200 yards out, hit a rib going in and it was quartering away from me. The bullet went into the off shoulder and blew up! I lost the whole front quarter.

I was using a 160 grain Nosler Partition.

Sure didn't make me very happy! I sold the gun and have been using a 270, 308 and 30-06 ever since and have not had any problem with bullets blowing up or ruining a lot of meat!

I don't have any problem with any of these calibers on deer or elk!

The 7mm Rem Mag is marginally higher performing than the 30-06. It does burn more powder and generate more recoil and muzzle blast through. Notice I did not say its a better round, because its not really. In actual performance, the .270, .280, 7mm Rem Mag, .308, and .30-06 are all very close. IMO, the .280 Rem is a better choice. It will come very close to the 7mm Rem Mag's numbers and kicks a lot less. This is first hand experience. I do have a 7mm Rem Mag in my safe. Its just another big game cartridge that falls right next to a lot of other ones.

If by a good varmint round, you mean it will kill varmints, then I guess all rifle rounds are good varmint rounds. The Magnums are way too big for varmints. Barrel over heating is a big problem, recoil, and ammo cost makes them a poor choice for varmint hunting. Another knock against them for varmint hunting, is the lack of good varmint bullets. Varmint bullets frag easily as to not riccochet, or extremely limit the riccochet. Big bullets do not frag and will travel a long ways after bouncing off a rock or hard dirt.

Honestly have never shot a 7mm mag, so cannot say from experience, but the ballistics and what I have read about them they are a great caliber for large game. Do not think I would use a 7 mm for a varmint rifle. I shoot a .270 for deer here and it is all the rifle I could ever need for deer. Really think my next rifle purchase will be a 30-06, versatility.

If you want my honest opinion it is one of the more overrated cartridges. Sure, it will kill alot of animals, but so wont an 06 wil less recoil and a bigger bullet. My buddy has one and we have had to track every deer he shot with it. He went to a .280 Rem and has dropped every deer since. If it is working for you great! It would just not be my first choice.

It's a very popular round. I'll give it that.

I just always considered it to be a poor choice. If you're going to burn all that powder and take that recoil...........buy a .300 Mag and have a genuine "big gun". If you want a flat shooting deer rifle...........then buy a .270 or .280 or 30-06 and save the noise, recoil and ammo $$.

i think it is a very accurate caliber. but i still love my 300 wsm. but to each his own. i am sure there are people out there who hate the short mag. the important thing is what do you think of it.

hey the 160 grain partition round is not really made for hunting, but more for target practice and i would rather use a 175gr. corelock than any thing else.

the 7mm rem. Mag. is a great varmit all it really is a 30.06 necked down to a .284 magnum. it is also a good big game round too. and it dose not kick that bad and in fact my 12ga. has more recoil then that.
if u want to really feel some ting that kicks, step up a mm to a 8mm mauser with 47 grains of duepont 30-31 with a 170gr. spira point with a mag primer now tel me with the recoil is comprable to. hahahahaha i know.(it is my grandpas handloads he know no there is some kick and loud)
but in all in all it is a uliterian rifle. and if u want to drop ur deer aim 1inch below the spine and behind the front shoulder and u will drop him in his tracks and u wont have to track him out its called the sweet spot. and that gos the same with an elk or caraboiu or moose

yea these guys are good mine is a savage Remington, Winchester, Ruger, Savage or Weatherby but go with what ever feels good to u im not going to tell u what to get but will suggest the savage because the accurecy if extremly awsome and they do not kick ****** hard as they say they do. yes they are loud i give u that mine does not kick as hard as people make it sound yes it gave me punishment when i first shot it but i shot 40+ rounds through it in about 4 hrs taking my time and the first round that i spent was place 1 inch above the bullseye at 100yds im set up at 300+yds for my rifle. i put 2 bullets in the same whole when i shot my first two shells. but like i said go with feels comfertable to you and if they (as my grandpa says if they sing to you it will allow you to shoot it and hit what your aiming at) sing to u thats the gun for you.i suggest go into pawn shops and look around for several different calibers and dont just limit your self to just one caliber. but they are all good guns and <warning they are kind of spendy for a box of shells, they range any where from $16.00-$24.00 abox> and i suggest look more at an 30.06 and guns like that
i gave you all i can say about it go with what FEELS GOOD TO YOU! NOBODY ELSE!

Recoil is a subjective thing. What feels heavy to one person may be extremely heavy and uncomfortable to a new rifle shooter. It can be light to a person that has been seasoned by the shooting big magnums for a long time. For someone to get their first rifle, it is not suggested they start with a magnum, period. Start with something that kicks a lot less and work on building shooting form. Thats hard to do when they are afraid of the recoil.

i agree aj but here is the thing, whats the sence with being afraid o the recoil. it will also make the shooter have respect for guns and teach them how to shoot that particular rifle handgun or sotgun, etc. One gun may fit the shooter and that very same gun wont be able to fit the next shooter its all based on what feel comfertable to the shooter when he/she goes and pics out their first gun, agreed? no two guns are alike. soo it does not kick as bad as people make it sound, imo. it does not kick as bad as a 30.06 or 300 mag or a 270 ect. it felt like a 30.06 to me and it has its own recoil i understand that but u have to look at it from this point of view too. if people would think about it the 7mm rem mag is the same as a .284 and it basicly is a 30.06 necked down to a .28 caliber thats all a 270 is think about it. and i am not saying this to be a jerk cause im not all im doing is trying to get people understand theese things. it only hurts if u think about it

JimT the only things a big bullet is for is penittration and yes an 06 will kill the same but can their slugs go way down to a 79 grain slug? the 7mm rem mag can. thats why its one of the best out there.

I am very strongly thinking of purchasing one and that would be my first rifle. What brand do you think you are going to go with? Tikka, Remington, Winchester, Ruger, Savage or Weatherby

    [/ QUOTE ]

    1. Tikka
    2. Remington
    3. Savage

    None of the other ones!

Go with the 30-06 or the 270! You will be happy you did instead of the 7mm!!
