a few "shed trap" ideas

Let me here your thoughts on this:

I've been thinking of making some sort of trap that will hopefully get some sheds. I have a few ideas please bear with me:

1. I would put this out in mid-feburary when I know that they are definately shedding here in Ohio.

2. I would place three rails (like the ones that stop signs are on) into the ground in a triangle shape. I would wrap to sides with fencing or chicken wire. Something that they could get out of if they are not shedding. I'd put corn, or some other kind of bait in the middle of it. Hopefully, they would bump the rails and fence and knock off there horns.

3. Another idea would be to screw the lid of a peanut butter jar onto a tree. Then screw the jar back onto the lid and cut of the bottom of the jar with a razor knife exposing the peanut butter. Above that I'd place a board or anything that would bump their horns to get them to fall off.

Just some brainstorming, let me know what you think, or let me know some ideas if anyone has ever tried this

yea could work, if you stay simple and basic it might work some people swear that the shed traps are very useful while others say the opposite.

I always wanted to try the trap but my dad wont let me because e thinks they will get caught, but the peanut butter one sounds good!

I've seen idea 2 before, and people really like it, they used two to five steel fence posts and sections of old cattle panel. They cut the panel in three foot sections. The posts where driven to make a v (2 posts) or a w (5 posts), the panels where cliped on and the corn was dumped. I know around here 5 posts are $3.00, find a farmer with an old cattle or hog panel that is no longer used to turn livestock, most will give them away to get them out of their pasture, a bag of fencing brads is about $2.00 so for about $10.00 bucks you can have an awesome shed trap. If I get back out to that farm anytime soon I'll post some pics, it's really a nice setup

Thats funny you said that, I friend of mine actually has a patent on a similar idea. He is still working on it to makeit happen. He's really funny about it and won't go into any details, not even to his friends. Must be a really good idea!

I doubt you can get a patent....this idea has been online for years!! The one I heard was to make an X with 4 posts (one at each point of the X) and then get 2 hog panels and put one from one point of the X to the oppose point, then do the same on the others. Then put corn in the center of the X (where the lines, or panels, meet. The deer put their heads in there getting the corn, and the panels knock the loose antlers off, but they can still get well-attached antlers out of the panels.

Sounds good, but have you ever thought about using a 45 gallon drum cut in half lengthwise, like a cattle feeder. Get some rebar and weld the bars from end to end far enough apart to allow the deer to get their snouts in , and allow only contact with the base of the horn on the rebar. Peas work real well on these wiley critters in my neck of the woods.
If you only put enough in to make them try harder to reach the goodies they'll really push that half barrel around.

What I do is first find out where the deer are at & if they are shedding then I find a fallen tree and put corn or grain as far under as I can so when they stick there head under the log to get at the food the bump there antlers and fall off you'll find them right buy the tree usally and your only cost is the corn or grain give it try yo never know you might find a huge shed as your reward. You'll have to check it at least every other day before they get all chewed up or picked up by other shed hunters. Good Luck to all of you fellow shed hunters.
