what is best way to look for sheds in thick timber?
Follow their trails & find their bedding areas.
If you're confident the area holds sheds, then put together a grid pattern and walk it slowly. Always use binoculars when you can and do it before the foliage comes back in the spring - better yet, try to get in there before the snows gone so you can see where the deer are concentrated. Just a few tips....
look at fence crossings (if any)
and creek crossing any where the would have to jump are put a lot of effert getting threw
The grid pattern search works best for me.Make your passes back and forth close together looking for parts of an antler not the entire antler.Try searching the area from differnt angles too.
Look on overcast days or days with a mist light rain, antlers stand out better. If the sun is out try keeping the sun at your back. And don't be affraid to search the same area again later in the year if you searched the first time when deer were still shedding.
all this helpful information and NEVER GIVE UP . . . at least until you know for sure there aren't any after a couple months.
I just follow heavy used trails
