Default Looking for places my dog can shed hunt

Hi all, I wasn't sure where to put this but thought I'ld post it here. Some of you may know that I bought a black lab this past summer and have been training her to find shed deer antlers. She is doing very well and retreives both on sight and by smell. I will be starting to work her in the fields out at my dads the next 2 months with "planted" sheds so she gets more used to field work.

My problem is I am limited to where I can take her shed hunting and was wondering if anyone would be willing to let us come and run her for sheds on a property that has produced sheds in the past. I am currently located in Northwestern IL and would like to keep travel within an approx 4 hour drive radius. I would like to keep the shed of her first ever solo retreive, past that it would be your choice of who keeps what but I would like to take pics of LeeLoo with any sheds she retrieves.

If this is something you'ld be interested in pm me so we can talk about it.

    Thanks

    Gary

Awesome idea! I know of guys in NE MN, who shed hunt hard with their dogs....I'll do some digging and see if I can give you some names! I would love to see a dog working a field for sheds! Up in Sask: I can't imagine how great a dog would be! Hey sureshot...I think need2hunt needs to head up your way! If you ever get the urge to head to MN: I would be happy to let you hunt several thousands of acres that I can get access to!! Good Luck

Heres a good article about shed hunting dogs...

    http://www.northamericanwhitetail.co.../ht_0903sheds/

I gave my lab a small shed the day I bought her, then I just waited until I noticed her starting to pick things up and carry them around. That's when I started playing with her with throwing a shed out and having her retreive it on command. Giving them a treat when they bring it back helps alot too. Next I would start throwing 2 sheds out and have her retreive, then retrieve the second one. Now she's to the point that I can go outside and hide the sheds by throwing them around the yard and the bushes and then bring her out later and give her the shed command and she goes to work. I try to do this when theres a slight breeze and work her into the wind. She's has some problems with retreiving the bigger sheds because she is still young but she's getting there.

N2H, give me a PM, let me know how far you are from southern WI, I can come up with plenty of land, just let me know if you want to drive and when you can come! BTW, I have my lab, which I've been working with also... 2 noses is better than one.
