Like everything, you get what you pay for. I would stay away from the low end junk, but realize that not many including myself can go with top of the line. Nikon, Burris, and Leupold all make good mid-range binos as well as some other companies. I use 8x42 Wind River binos - they are made by Leupold but are a little less expensive. I don't care too much for 10x binoculars because I can't hold them still. I've found field of view and light gathering is lacking in many compact binos - so I go with a "full size" set. These are just some of my thoughts and opinions for what it's worth.

I would buck up and pay for a good set that will last you forever...I went with Pentax, I really like them...there are a lot of other good brands too...Alpen, Leupold, Nikon etc. do your homework...make sure you get some that are phase coated

If you would like a good value check out the Simmons Atec line. They perform well but don't require you to obtain a second mortgage to buy them.
