On Tuesday I spent some time scouting for wintering bucks. I was really surprised to find this group of mule deer bucks had already started shedding, since the mule deer around here usually don't start shedding until March. The photo below is from a long ways off, but you might be able to make out that the group contained 2 full-racked, 2 half-racked, and 1 bald buck.

I watched them graze for a while, hoping other bucks would show up. I was glassing one of the half-racked bucks when he lifted up his head and dropped his remaining antler. Even though I had seen it drop, it still took me a while to locate the 63-inch antler.
