I need help selecting a 12 gauge

My brother who lives in Ohio---loves his Remington 870. He has a 30" barrel with screw in chokes for ducks, pheasant, etc & then bought a slug barrel for it with sites on it. Pretty nice set-up.

If you are just after a slug gun, I would go for this gun with no hesitation.



Its the H&R 1871 Ultra Slug Hunter. It is extremely accurate and since the receiver is so short, it has a shorter more wieldy overall length compared to a pump or semi.

If you wish to hunt upland game (rabbit, pheasant, grouse, woodcock, etc), turkey, waterfowl, along with big game, you can look into the pump guns.

Mechanically, for the money its hard to beat a Mossberg 500. They are not the prettiest gun in the woods, but they will hold up just fine. They use what Mossberg calls the Accu-Choke but its the same as the Win-Chokes that Winchester, Browning, Ruger, and others use. Its not as smooth as some of the other guns, but it will get the job done. It will loosen up in time with use. Its been around for many years and is a military gun. Extra barrels are moderately priced.

A little higher in price is the Remington 870 Express. Its the same as the Wingmaster other than the birch stocks on the Express vs the walnut stock on the Wingmaster, and the finish. It's a great gun with nice lines and is never a bad choice. There are more 870 shotguns out there than any other. Extra barrels are a bit more expensive than the Mossberg.

THERE ARE A BUNCH OF GOOD SLUG GUNS OUT THERE.I USE A WINCHETER 1300 PUMP WITH A FULLY RIFLED BARREL.ITS HAD ITS SHARE OF ABUSE AND HAS NEVER FAILED ME OR GAVE ME A BIT OF TROUBLE IN TEN YEARS OF USE.MOSSBERGS ARE HARD TO BEAT FOR THEIR PRICE.YOU PROBABLY CAN PICK ONE UP CHEAP AT A GUN SHOW.PUMPS ARE GENERALLY CHEAPER,BUT AUTOMATICS HAVE LESS RECOIL.

AJ, isn't there more of a difference in wingmaster and expresses then wood? I am pretty sure the moving parts are polished/honed a lot finer on the wingmaster then the express. Making it smoother cycling with less jams. I bought a 870 supermag express and sold it 3 months later.

Not really. I have opened both of them up and the internals looked about identical. The action bars and bolt are polished on the Wingmaster and are parkerized on the Express. Which is still the difference in the finish. The Super Mag is a different critter. It has a longer ejection port, the ejector is moved to the rear, and the bolt is different. They loosen up and get smoother after some use. Put a thousand rounds through it and it should work like a charm.

an remmington 870 deer gun or mossburg. whinchester what ever u want and feels good to u. thats all i can say. go to www.remmington.com or whincesterguns.com like i said what ever makes u feel good to shoot and have fun to shoot. i depends on what size u want and all those too. my 12 ga. is a 3 1/2 inch mag from benelli. it the nova and its only costed my mom 300.00 somthing bucks and u can get rifled berrals for the beneli nova as well.

I have been the 870 route with a smooth bore and that is a nice affordable deer gun but it won't be long before you will want to up grade to a fully rifled cantilever slug barrel. For the same price of the barrel you can get yourself a real nail driver as mentioned above. The H&R Ultra slug hunter or hunter deluxe. The "Cadilac" of slug guns IMO. Easily good out to 150 with the right slugs. I have the deluxe and love it. You can have a whole gun for the price of a barrel.

Check your state regulations. Some states say that it has to be a smoothbore.

If you've got $300+ I would go with a Benelli Nova. If not, I would go with the H&R I've got 2 a 243 and 25-06 they are very reliable guns.

i own a nova and i have to say they are sweet shooting guns. light fast and reliable too. easy to clean u just remove 2 pins and u can disasemble it under 5 mins. but trust me read the instructions it helps to know how and what not. i did not do any thing with out checking the instructions on that score, but the camo patterns are never the same they are i dentical but there different at the same time. my gramps got his the same day as i did. and they kindof kick with the hard rubber recoil pad in it but take it out and get a seperate recoil boot or pad.

hands down......the h&r ultra deluxe slug gun!!!...i have 3 870's & they have been great deer guns for me, no complaints here, however the h&r is built just for slug shooting, down to the raised comb, trigger pull & bull barrel. best bang for the buck!!!! good luck!!

Another vote for the H&R Ultra Slugger in 12GA...The 20 will get it done too. I read a publication that stated the Ultra Slugger was the most accurate slug gun it had tested...Those other guns tested included the Tar-Hunt so you know the H&R is a quality piece of equipment...Nothing fancy but totally effective.

I shoot a Mossberg 695 bolt action 12ga. They discountinued them for 2003, if you can dig one up, get it! There is a recall on some of them, something needed to get fixed on the bolt. Some people don't like mossberg, but i love that 695 for deer hunt!

I'm sighted in for 125yds, any further, you get a HUGE drop! Then again, i don't get to shoot past 100 yds anyway. Oop, one more thing, I don't even see deer out gun hunting,lmao (no joke either)
