What are they? Some of the old boxes are collectors items.

I have some sitting around here from the 60's. They work just fine. Like others said, go ahead and use them.

They should work fine! I have some older shotgun shells dating back to 1974 and they shoot okay.

Heck, I have a buddy who's a police officer and he brought me 3 or 4 boxes of old 20 guage shells, I mean these things were old. One box still had old paper hulls. About 2 weeks after he gave them to me, I went to a preserve. I missed one bird that day.

Yeah, unless they're obviously corroded or look bad, I'd bet they're fine.

Heck I still buy the old federal paper cases when I can, shoot them at trap and enjoy the leftovers. Old shells will fire without a problem, when I field tested the 935 half the shells I put threw it where shells that had been sitting in my rack for years..AKA loads I never used since I got rid of my 835. They all shot without problem and did some dirty work on th side.

Now the cases are another matter, I try to keep one of every case out there jst for classic personal value, my grandfather gave me a full box from the early 40"s, winchester 's i think..I've shot two shells(without flaw) but otherwise they are intact.

just reminds me of the so called "good old days" and Im shure the small game hunting was just that. What a time

Don't remember, not much though. It was just one of those days where I didn't miss. I think our group put out 30 birds and we got 25 or so. We split groups and dogs with about 4 or 5 guys to a group. One group sucked, bad. I couldn't believe the misses they had. I was hitting so many birds, the other guys in the group were getting ticked, so I started shooting back up. I'd let them get off 4 or 5 shots and if the bird was still flying, I'd finally shoot, LOL. It was fun. I remember another party (not ours)let some chukars go and one flew right at me and they shot at it peppering me, ! Well this bird was flying with the wind quartering to me just smokin, after ducking their shots, I swung on that bird coming left to right and dropped it with one shot. Probably one of the best shots I've ever put on a bird. Talk about fun, I picked up their bird, they paid for and stuck it in my vest and they never said a word because they know they shot me.

Enough about me, what was the original question?

Tominator, sounds like a game preserve you hunted at. I'm not knocking it, I have a "blast" there LOL. I still remember the paper hulls, and still have saved some. I certainly don't think they are unsafe, but probably not as good as the newer ones.

The paper hulls were fine, it was the crappy shotcups from those days. Todays one piece wads are a huge advancement in technology but the paper hulls are still loved by shooters.

Federal, Nobel Sport, and Fiocchi, still make paper hulled target ammo. It is move expensive than the plastic hulled ammo. The plastic hulls last longer too, but they don't have the smell.

Mike--yep, preserve. Lone Oak is the name of it. It's up near a state park, and yes, it was a "blast."

AJ--seems to me the "shotcup" on these old paper hulls was a paper wrapping and a little paper disk. I wonder what shot strings looked like back then.

Bill is a great guy Chris........thats where I do most of my preserve shooting, and buying of birds as well. From what I hear he may be going out of Buis. though.

Most of the old shells I have are just that, paper "wad" with a fiber shotcup on the bottom. I think remington had the first plastic wad/hull in the 60's, I could def. be wrong about that though...remember the article just not the company.
