To much power?

Well for about 6 years I have been using a 12ga with 3in slugs and no problome but now im 18 and it starts to hurt my shoulder after about 5 shots I use to shot 30 rounds with no problome so im going to eigher use my muzzloader or use 2 3/4 in slugs has any one had this problome at a young age or know any one that had this problome beside older fellows 50+?

Recoil can affect anyone. You can become accustomed to it though. Its kind of like running, the more you run the longer you can run. Shooting heavier recoiling guns is like that. You build a tolerance for recoil. Shooting form can have a lot to do with how much recoil you feel. If you are hunched over the bench it will be a lot worse than if you can sit straight up and rock back with the jolt.

Shooting heavy recoiling guns is not really fun to do. Its hard to sit at the bench and find the best load when it beats you up every time you squeeze the trigger. This can cause some nasty flinching. When you least expect it (deer in the sights) you can pull the gun away and cause a miss or worse a bad hit. I know, been there, done that. One item that can help a lot is a PAST Super Mag Recoil Shield it helps the shoulder a lot and is mandatory for me to do a long shooting session with a boomer. Here is a pic of one.



I don't see a reason to shoot 3" slugs. The 2 3/4" slugs typically will shoot better, and have plenty of energy to do the job.

I have an Ithaca 12 gauge "Featherlite" with a smooth slug barrel. The recoil on this shotgun is terrible!!! I injured a nerve in my right shoulder sighting this monster in back in 1989! I will be turning 55 years of age, in a couple days and yes the older I get the more sore my shoulder becomes after shooting hard recoiling firearms. I also intend to use my M/L's here in Indiana for Deer Hunting, as they have far less recoil than the 12 gauge slugs. I am planning to buy a 20 gauge slug gun with rifled barrel in the future though. In Kentucky I use my .270 Ruger for Deer and have NO problem with recoil. Most likely due to the better shaped stock. You might try some low recoil slug loads 2 3/4" shells by Remington with 7/8 oz slugs.

If you're 18 then you probibly just stopped growing or you are still growing. When I was your age, I started having a lot of joint pain. My doctor said that was normal. You could be dealing with that. I would take some Ibuprophren and suck it up.
