I have a Canon EOS rebel, 35mm camera. I want to upgrade to a full size digital to replace my 35mm. We were looking at the Canon digital EOS Rebel XT tonight. It is the 8mp model. anyone have anything good, bad or neutral to say about this camera? I know it is a little pricey, but I hate buying something, and then wishing I had bought something better. I'm leaning towrd the Canon, so I can use my zooms from the 35mm Rebel. The guy at the camera store said they will work, but the zoom will be multipled by 1.5, which is fine with me. Is this right?
Sorry for all the question. I could really use some input. Thanks in advance. |

tedi--I have never owned a Canon digital--we have a really nice Nikon digital and I have a cheap Olympus I keep in the truck but I can assure you Canon makes a great camera. If you already have lenses that will fit that digital then that would make my decision right there.

Why buy another camera body only to buy more lens for it. Cannon make a good camera. I personally use a Nikon 35mm and have several lens for it. I only bought the Fuji FinePix to break myself into the digital world. Next will be a D70 or a D100 digital camera body from Nikon. I would stay with what you have now! Less money in the long run! JMHO!

Sorry, I don't know about the cam you're looking at. I have a Canon PowerShot S1 IS with 10x optical zoom. I love this camera & it takes great low light pics. I'm by no means a camera expert though.

your lenses should work fine with the XT.. (they are AF lenses right?)
some of the digitals now have a crop factor..thats where the 1.5x magnification comes in.. IMO, the XT is the best bang for the buck.. (it does require a few extra bucks though).. especially since you already have lenses.. It shoots a nice clean photo.. umm make sure you have held the cam though.. I hear it is on the small side (which can be good also).. I have the canon 20D, and my hands are a little cramped.. the extra battery grip can give some more real estate though. |

Thanks Shutter. I handled the regular Rebel digital. The 6.3 mp camera. The size didn't feel bad to me. I am used to a small digital though, as my everyday, throw it in my pocket cam, is a Casio EXILIM, which is tiny. The Rebel Digital was similar to my 35mm EOS Rebel. Yes. my lenses are AF. What do you mean by "crop factor"? The guy at the cam store was telling me that on the XT, my 100x300 lense will end up being a 150x450 which is perfect, because I was wanting a 400. Is this true? Or does the "crop Factor" fudge these numbers? Thanks in advance.

The crop factor comes from the fact that the Sensor in a digital camera is smaller than the frame of 35mm film. This means the digital SLR crops out the center portion of a given lenses field of view, but the image is still at the full resolution of the digital sensor. This crop factor gives a lens on a digital SLR a smaller field of view than it would have on a film SLR, giving it the same field of view of a longer lens when compared to a film SLR. So when placed on your DSLR the 300mm has the FOV of a 450mm lens on a film SLR.

Thanks for the link. I understand a little better now...I think...lol. Basically....putting my 300 lense on the XT doesn't really make the lense a 450. I'm just gonna have a smaller field of view through the digital. One that would be equivilant to a 450 on 35mm SLR. right? As long as my zooms will work, thats pretty much what I'm worried about. Guess I'm gonna go plunk down the money on the camera. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I aprreciate it.

Well.. We ordered the camera last night. Actually found it onsale for over $100 less than anywhere else. That sealed the deal. Will go pick up the camera, and a 512mb card after work tonigh. Can't wait to play with it. Hopefully I'll be posting some pics from it soon. Thanks for all your input guys.

Well, the good news is I got the camera. It takes awesome pics, even in point and shoot mode. The bad news...my Quantaray 70mmX 300 mm lense, from my Rebel 200 ended up not being compatable. According to Canon, the micro prossesor, in older afermarket lenses, doesn't communicate properly with the micro proccesor in the newer EOS cameras.
Looks like I'm gonna have to spend a few hundred more $$$ and buy a new zoom. Definately spending the extra money, and buying a Canon factory lense this time.
