I got into a discussion with a fairly new member of our chuch about church doctorine. I became a Christian at 21 and didn't join a church untill I was 24 or 25. I did a lot of investigations in church doctorine to help me decide what denomination best suited the way I interpreted the bible.
In doing this I learned the different doctorines of most of the prodistant denominations and probibly know most of them better than most of their members. In the discussion he said he didn't care to know the doctorine and said he didn't know the doctorine of his old church. It seems to me that if you are going to join a church you should know what they stand for. I can understand people grew up in the church not really knowing it, but I would think if someone changes religions they would at least be a little courious about what they are changing to. So the question is, Do you know what what your church believes and why they belive it? |

I know my church doctorine and hold most of it as sacred. That being said I know many people who do not know what there church stands for or if they have an agenda or not. I cannot stay in a church that doesn't state their belief in the main Christian Doctorine. And a bible believing, preaching church is a must. Our church has a class to new members that teach what the churches doctorine is and if you can't agree with that than you can choose not to be a member. I believe that a lot of churches don't want their members to know what they stand for so that their agenda can move forward without oppisition.

I'm not a member of any particular church, but have been searching on-and-off. In my searches and discussions with members of these churches, I wonder many times if most churches treat their doctrine as superior to the Bible.
However, something speaks more clearly to me than doctrine--it's how the members of the congregation treat each other and visitors. |

I wonder many times if most churches treat their doctrine as superior to the Bible. [/ QUOTE ] Doctorine is how the church interprets specific passages in the bible and aknowledges the ligitimacy of the text therein. ie. Some churches maintain that the bible is the actual written text of God, some belive it is man made and inspired by God while some question its valitity all together. [ QUOTE ] However, something speaks more clearly to me than doctrine--it's how the members of the congregation treat each other and visitors. [/ QUOTE ] No arguement with that one. |

I'm a very strong Christian who is very well read in the bible and church doctorine. I don't agree with all of it, but do live by it. (the doctorine)
It just seemed strange to me that someone who I think is a very intelligent person would join a church without knowing what that church believed or stood for. |

Our church also has a class on church doctrine. Writers,I believe, were inspired by the Holy Spirit to write what they did. I like to think the church is like a hospital where people are brought to be healed. Its not the name on the church thats going to get you into heaven but whats in your heart. Eternity has but two choices and your responsible for that choice. I know, you first have to hear the choices and thats our responsibility as a believer.
