Default Prediction

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that the National Anthem for the super bowl is going to suck.

I heard on the radio this morning that Aretha Franklin, Aaron Neville and some other dude is/are "performing" the national anthem.

I've got a feeling they'll add their little pop/motown twist to it, which I hate. Seems to me the National Anthem should be sung in a traditional fashion like Carrie Underwood did for the Seattle/Carolina game.

OK, I'm done whining.

Not whining. I totally agree. The music is written one way, read it, learn it, sing it. As I have said in other posts, "America, Free country. Don't like it and the values/traditions you are FREE to leave."

Carrie Underwood did a terrific job. Although the folks for the SB are great singers.... I'll probably just hit the MUTE BUTTON when they come!

I agree!!! I hate that pop music motown crap, and I definately don't want to hear it in my national anthem........I never listen to it at home or on any radio (thank God for country).

I would have to disagree...I think Aretha Franklin and Aaron Neville are great singers and will honor our nation with their rendition. That is, unless, "some other dude" stinks up the joint...LOL.

I don't understnad why they dont sing it normal it sounds better and seems more respectful rathy than "jazz" up , spice it up a littleadding there own lttle twists to the song.

I for one can't stand when the Anthem isin't sung correctly. I can't stand when pop stars add the twist to it. It wasn't created for their to be a twist added to it. And I really can't stand when the spectators stand their with there hands in their pocket or jaw jabbing during the Anthem either.

As a music educator and simi-professional musician I'll say this. To add to existing music in a way that personalizes it to the performer while keeping the spirit of the music can be very respectfull to the intent of the composer and can add to the enjoyment of the music. "for the land of the free" When you hear a vertuoso soprano hit that high "C" in the word free, your heart can jump and swell with pride. That not is not written. So is she ruining the music by changing it?

A good R&B singer adding couple riffs to the music is no less distracting to me then the twang in Rebba McEntire's voice or the nasle sound of Willy Nelson singing it with a country twist.

[/ QUOTE ] Here Here. I agree with you totally. I think the rhythm should be presented much the same but with their own little note changes. That's why Whitney Houston's version is one of my favorites. As long as they get the words right, that's what matters. Besides, I think Toby Keith's song should be our new national anthem. LOL
