    Default Worship Music

When you're either in your car or in your Church, which do you rather worship and give praise with....contemporary Christian music or Hymns ??

The reason I ask, is our church is realtively young as far as age structure goes, but we still have several older couples and it's been interesting to note the difference in music preferences........to me, I could sing the new Christian stuff all day long....I can really get fired up, and it can also revive me at the same time.

Don't get me wrong, Hymns to me still have a very important place, but in that same breathe, thats kind of what i was getting at....they have a place and a time...they seem to garner more respect and in our church anyways, it is a significant event when hymns are sung......Easter, Christmas, Funerals, Weddings...etc...

So what's it like where you are at ??

    I enjoy both.
The bible says to make a joyful "Noise" unto the Lord, he didn't say it had to be music, as defined by our personal preference

I admit that some sounds more like noise to me, but as long as it praises him, it's OK with me. In the same token, some old hymns can put me to sleep

we sing mostly traditional hymns at our church, with a little mix. Oddly enough, this is a discussion that we are having right now with our board as to what to do.

"Give me that old time religion, give me that old time religion, if it was good enough for Daniel, its good enough for me..... "

Actually I like the new stuff too but Im a BIG fan of Southern Gospel. I play the guitar in our Choir and I love to play those old Pentecostal hymns. The new stuff is a blast too but man the Spirit really moves when everyone gets into some of those old Hymns!

We have different worship leaders for music in our church so one Sunday it will be older more traditional music, and the next much more contempory. My fiance is a worship leader and her music has a tendency to lead towards the newer stuff, with drums and quitars at the front of the church, while I really prefer the older music.

I enjoy the contemporary praise and worship music with some hymns thrown in here and there. Most of my P&W happens in my car or at home lately because the worship leader at our church basically repeats almost all of the same songs every week.

I've seen more and more churches start out with what they call "praise teams" that sing a few contemporary songs during Sunday morning services. Then gradually they take over and there's not even a choir anymore. And the singing takes up over an hour or so of the service.

Sure, I love contemporary music and can jam with the best of them....but I also love the hymns I was raised on and nowadays I find that very few churches include them in their services anymore.

    Very sad.......

    Few of my all-time favorites:

    1. Blessed Assurance
    2. Old Rugged Cross
    3. Victory In Jesus
    4. Just As I Am
    5. Sweet Sweet Spirit

blessed assurance jesus is mine...oh what a foretaste of glory devine....

I was raised on the good ol' hymns and they will always hold a special place in my heart. However, I love the new stuff too.

We sing contemporary worship music at our church. That is one of the things that drew me to it. I grew up in a church that sang nothing but hymns. I don't think that there is anything wrong with hymns, we actually sing a few at our church, just different arrangments. I've never been a big fan of hymns (I respect the words and reverence of them, honestly they just put me to sleep). I guess in a sentence, hymns are fine for some, just not me. Give me some Tomlin, Crowder, Third Day, etc.

Well Steve some od these contemporary groups got the "noise" thing down all right...what i cant stand is the repeating of a chorus..I got it the first time!! I too like the old hyms too..but I can live with a mix, which is what our church does. I know we are going too long when the "white hair group" starts to sit down during worship music..LOL

There was a time that some churches wanted to ban "Amazing Grace" and "Just a closer Walk with Thee" because they were too worldly.

Our church is very versitile in it's songs of worship. We go from Handle to Petra and everything in between. I like it that way. One minute you hear styles from old time gospel, barbershop, then jazz, R&B rock and the next thing might be "just as I am?
