This is something I wrote and sent out to my friends...so I wanted to share it here as well.
Ever year around Christmas, we are battered with news stories about how Wal-Mart's sales will go for the year, how people aren't giving gifts anymore but buying gift cards, and about how many people were trampled/arrested over the latest annoying toy. Certainly many have a basis to be cynical about Christmas but hey--at least we still hear Linus read the gospel in A Charlie Brown Christmas.
Easter on the other hand has become even more of a joke to this Godless nation. Not only do we push pukey pastels and have an odd obsession with eggs (I prefer mine scrambled, thank you very much), but most of society completely leaves Jesus Christ out of the dialogue completely.
Certainly, celebrating Jesus' miraculous birth is a wonderful thing. However, we have completely forgotten the importance of Holy Week and Easter altogether.
This week we celebrate Jesus' sinless life, earthly ministry, His perfect sacrifice for us on the cross, His triumph over death, and His resurrection.
Cadbury Eggs and Peeps are yummy, I'll give you that. There is nothing wrong with hard-boiled eggs, and easter ham, and chocolate bunnies, but Jesus is the bread of life. If this Sunday you have time to stuff colorful baskets full of plastic grass, I would hope you also have time to spend in God's House in thanksgiving for what He has done.
