Treating/weather proofing strikers?

I was pondering the idea of treating my wooden strikers with something to weather proof them a bit. Stain, paint, and/or some sort of sealant.
Has anyone done this?
If so, has it effected preformance?
I asume the very tip needs to remain untreated, but the rest of it should be ok.
I know most of my wooden striker are very light colored so it could also be looked at as camo-ing them.
Thoughts on this?

I have a bit of stain left over from bow making and was thinking it could tone down the bright wood color and maybe weather proof it too. I would of coarse cover with a good sealant too.
