Default Talking in NH -may be long-

I got out of school today and found us to have the best weather we have had since early september. The temps almost reached 60 and sunny. After two days of rain we now have lost most of the snow so I decided to go on my first scouting trip of the year. I ended up heading off to a new place that I have never hunted before but is very close to my house. Instead of a 40 minnute drive I had a 10 minnute drive. I have known that the turkeys are there but just have never had the time to scout it out. When I pulled into the small trail to park and get out I realize that I have forgotten my boots. This is just great, It has rained for two days and snow is melting so all there is is water everywhere and im wearing my white school shoes. I ended up staying clean while walking around to the back side of the field. Once on the back side I found a rock wall and decided to walk along it. I actually ended walking on it to stay out of the water. Well as I walk along I swear I can hear a gobble a long ways off but it is so faint that I think im imagining it. I keep going and find anouther wall that intersects the one im on and takes me back in the direction of the field and where I thought the gobbles were comeing from. I keep going for about 150 yards avoiding the water as much as possible when one huge gobble lets go. Im totally shocked as this is the first gobble I have heard since May 31, 2004 at 10:45am. Yes I still remember it, its been a long wait inbetween gobbles. But anyways its so close that I sit on the wall behind a tree and throw my mask on. I was wearing my new REALTREE hat that I got a couple weeks ago. This hat is white or stone colored so I placed it behind the wall in a dry spot. I sit there not wanting to spook anything even though I still have over a month until the season starts. I sit for about 10 minnutes and hear about 20 gobbles. At one time I heard 4 in a row so I believe there are more than one bird gobbling. Im still an inexperianced turkey hunter so I cant tell the difference between a jake gobble and a tom or one turkey or tw.o After a while I decide nothing is comeing closer so I choose to slip out and not scare anything. I manage to get back to the car with just a minor amount of mud on my shoes. So for my first trip out this season I would call it a sucess. Oh yeah on my way home while putting my glasses on so I can see my head starts to feel weird and I notice that I dont have my hat. I let out a few words that cant be repeated because I cant believe that I could forget it behind that wall. I have worn this hat everyday since I have gotten it. I get back home and tell my dad about the gobbles and then my hat and let him know that I was heading back to get it. This time with my boots. When I get back, this time with my boots, I trounce right through the mud and water not with any care in the world. I almost run back in to get my hat as it is closing in on sundown. The hat was safe and sound right where I left it.

Well anyways that was my first afternoon souting for the 2005 season. Wow that was a long story for such a pointless topic. Sorry it was so long, but im fired up for this season. Come on May 3rd!!! Sorry again for the extended story.

Sounds like you've got a good place to start in May! Good Luck and figure out where he's roosted so you can be under him at daylight!
