    Default Gobbler down....

April 6th marked opening day of turkey season in Oklahoma. The morning started off slow--just a few distant gobbles on neighboring property but nothing close by. I decide to go ahead and sit in my pop-up on the edge of my Hamann Farms food plot. The woods started coming alive with gobbling at around 8am. Some light yelping and clucks immediately brought in 3 jakes to my position. Those 3 young teenagers were fired up--gobbling everytime I yelped at them. they kept circling around the blind looking for the hen. One of the jakes got so frustrated he just pretended a hen was there and started breeding the ground---was pretty funny. The jakes hung around for about 30 minutes----I could here a few more distant gobbles--they would gobble at my yelp calling but just couldn't get them to come it. finally the jakes left and I would do a few yelps/clucks every 10 minutes. About 45 minutes later I finally got a couple responses from my calling---and then the rain started. I continued calling about every 3 minutes and would get a gobble everytime. I just assumed it was the jakes returning when all of a sudden a hen entered the field. She started doing some soft yelps and so I started imitating her yelps. That did it--the gobblers couldn't hold back any more and came running to the area. they entered the plot about 70 yards away and just hung there for about 10 minutes--the hen continued to feed and then started to leave the plot---i kind of started to panic as the toms were following her. i started to do some aggressive calling and the hen changed positions and started coming right to me. The 2 toms eventually got within 30 yards but they were so close together I couldn't get a clean shot on just one. Finally they seperated at about 40 yards and I picked one out--and the Mossberg 835/Federal #5 did the trick!

I got the entire hunt on video--will try to upload the video today or tomorrow and get it posted--so for now all I have is pics.
