Well, today was the youth turkey hunting day in PA. The weather wasn't the greatest at 5am...little windy, raining, and a fog that wouldn't lift. My buddy Pete and I took out his son to try and get him his first bird.
At day break...heard nothing...I decided to keep quiet for a bit, then I heard two gobblers on the other hill. They were way over on the next property...but sorta gave me the green light to try and fire up any birds in our area.
Started with a diaphram and really didn't hear anything. It didn't look like it was going to be a good day. Finally thought I heard something...made a few calls and heard a gobble not too far off.
Started to work this bird when I realized he wasn't far and not alone. In about 60 seconds we had 7 gobblers at the decoy. He had trouble waiting for the birds to split up...but at 6:50 am Devin had his first bird on the ground.
Didn't have a scale, but guessed around 20lbs. When we got back to the truck...got the tape out and measured out a 9 3/4" beard with one 3/4" spur and 1" for the other.
It all happened quick...but I think he's hooked.I took some pics...but you'll have to wait for the roll to finish.
BTW, this early youth turkey season is prob. one thing I think the PGC has done right!
