What the Heck?

Went out hunting the other night, it's around 11:00pm and completely dark.
Walking through this grassy field and nearly to the woods this turkey takes off flying 2 feet from me. I was ready to take of running, I didn't know what the heck is was! Flipping a light on I could tell it was a turkey.
What I don't get is why it was one the ground, in the open. Looking around there was this small dirt area that was still warm where it had been. Kept looking didn't see any poults or nothing.
It was odd, anyone else seen turkeys do this?

I guess you were coon hunting. To answer your question no, I haven't seen that but I'm not going to be walking around in the woods at night down here with the number of snakes we have crawling around. Them suckers are too hard to see in the dark and I'm not that mad at a coon.

Maybe it was dustbathing itself, or trying to lay an egg?

Yeah, was out coonhunting,
It might of had poults, but I don't know. It was odd though.
Maybe it was scared of heights

I don't know about dusting, seems odd when it's dark out.

It had to have been poults, but I didn't here or see anything. Last year we found a nest of poults they were all making a "peep" sound after mom ran off.

a hen with young poults would be my guess also.
