how do you pick where to set up?

say if you dont do scouting for turkeys or have feed or anything for them and you just need to randomly pick where you want to set up to call in a gobbler how do you decide were to set up at??? i usually just set up at a random place and call... sometimes it works n sometimes it doesnt?

Wait til I here them gobbling, then try to get somewhat close to 'em, and find a tree to set-up at. You should do some scouting on your land, at least enough to figure the layout of the land, so you'll know what obsticles might be between you and a turkey at any specific time.

I'll agree.If I am going to set up on a gobbler that is gobbling.I try to pick a shady spot,and visualize him making his way along a tree/brush line,fencerow,or along side a creek.If I'm hunting birds that aren't gobbling I will track the roads,and hunt where there are alot of tracks.I will hunt where I find alot of scratchings.I will also hunt dust bowls in mid-day,field edges,or when it's windy/rainy get down in the bottoms,clearcuts,and fields.Hope I helped.

Another very important aspect not mentioned above that must be taken into consideration is to set up in a position that gives you as maximal shooting lane as possible depending on the terrain - I like to have at least ability to swing 180 degrees.

I would rather stay home than do my homework. It is much more enjoying when you put in the hard work, and then reap the rewards when your work pays off.

Ideally I like to know where they are roosting and their preferred travel route when they leave the roost, then get in that general direction. Other than that, wait til you hear them gobble and set up quick and call them in!

I can't say I ever just randomly pick a spot to turkey hunt. I always have a reason for choosing a place to set up on my home turf. I always do my pre-season scouting here at home. I don't understand why any turkey hunter wouldn't. Also, certain areas seem to always have birds around year after year so if I'm not on a gobbling bird I'll consider one of those areas as an option. I'll also look for fresh sign, like tracks, droppings, and scratching if I'm not on or moving to get near a gobbling bird. After the season starts, every day I'm in the woods I'm also scouting as I'm hunting both with my eyes and ears.

If I'm out of state hunting, I'll pick someone else's brain with a map in hand about what they know regarding the patterns of the birds before I enter the woods. At least that should get me started on choosing a place to listen for gobbling birds before I set up. From then on, I'm hunting and learning about the birds I'm hunting there.

i know the land good and every thing... but i cant really scout because its a 5 hour drive from here... i usually get 1 every year but i was just wondering on how u pick... i usually just randomly pick a spot that ive seen turkeys there b4 and start callin and it works...
