20" is way too short for a 3 1/2" gun. The increase in recoil and muzzle blast coupled with the loss of velocity makes it a losing combo in my book. If I were you.....I'd only go down to 24" if I was dead set on shortening the barrel. My advice would be to keep the 28" tube.

I had one of those thumbhole 835's in my hands this weekend and I did not like it as well as my 835.3 out of 10 is how I rank it. As far as 20 inch bbl I think it is to short as well but I have not shot it. It may work very well with the new choke Mossberg has out for them. The x-factor I believe it is called.

a 20 inch barrell will not hurt your velocity. All of your velocity at 20 inches in a shotgun. a 20 inch gun will have more muzzle jump than a long gun. I personally like a 22 or a 23 inch barrell on my turkey guns. Figure a 22 inch barrell and a inch and a half long choke tube. The main thing about a short gun is that it is easier to move in thick cover and easier to conceal than a 28 inch barrell. The gun is lighter also.

Don't tell that to my chronograph.

There will be a definite loss of velocity from 28" to 20". Take that to the bank.
