    Default Comp-N-Choke vs. Carlson

Here's where Im at folks,,, Gator gave me a Carlson .680 TRY. Choke awhile back and the pattern seems to be OK, and the price was even better...Thanks Jason..

I'm interested in the Comp-N-Choke .040(Xfull) so what I need is opinions from you all, should I invest $50.00 for the new choke, or stick with the Carlson ??

Now I realize this is all going to be opinion based, without actually seeing a pattern to go by, Im just expecting what you know based on your experience before I dump $50.00...

    Here's my setup..

    Winchester 1200 w/30" barrel
#4 Winchester Supreme Turkey load in 3"

Any opinions or suggestions ?? all are welcome...

Luke...what not try #5 shot and/or #6 shot with the choke you have first. I shoot #5's because they pattern a lot better out of my shotgun than #4's.

I wanted the Carlson also because of the price but everyone talked me into the comp-n-choke for another $30 so that is what I have. I have a 835 mossberg with a .680 comp-n-choke that better work dang it! I have not shot it yet so I can't give you an honest answer on which is better.

Trying to find a choke for a specific load is tough. Most folks buy a choke and run different ammo combos through it. Sometimes you'll be surprised what a gun choke combo will like. I got very good patterns with the comp n choke in my Stoeger. But it wasn't with the load I thought it would like. I wouldn't give up on the Carlson before I ran at least 4 different loads through it. I usually get together with 3-4 buddys and we each bring diferent loads. That gives a guys lots of options if each bring 3 boxes along.

    What Rhino said.

Curious to know why you are set on #4 shot?? Granted, it retains enough more downrange energy to extend your killing range by 10 yards or so.........but that extra 10 yards will put some awfully big empty spots in your pattern, too. I have seen time & time again that #6 shot will crumple the biggest of gobblers at any reasonable distance with much authority. Same goes for #5's. Problem you are going to run into there is that the .680" tube isn't tight enough for the smaller shot. You should go to a .665" (or XXX in C-N-C ) or so for the smaller shot.

This is all great advice and will see what i can do about getting some more different loads and size shot to try out..... The gun shop around here doesn't carry a very large selection so my options more than likely will be limited....

I have nothing against the Carlson choke, like I mentioned it patterns fairly well, but know I can get an even better pattern, so I will try your suggestions before giving the Comp-N-Choke a whirl....

THANKS all for the advice, and we'll see what happens..

I really couldn't honestly say if they do or not... Both are great chokes, and like others have said, I just need to find that right load for what choke I choose to go with...

And WELCOME aboard here Turkeystalker hope you are enjoying your stay here....

Not yet, I was mainly just using the Winchester Supreme #4's, I went today and got some #5's and #6's to try out tomarrow morning.... ... If the Supreme's don't work out I'll try another brand of shell..

Yeah Luke, if you get a XXX Full C-N-C, start out with Winchester Supreme HV #6 shot. Looks like your gun only handles 3" shells. But if it takes the 3.5" shells you might want to try them as well, more shot.

YEP.. just the 3" rounds John.. I'll see what I get from the 5's and 6's tomarrow on pattern improvement using the Carlson, if I don't see a considerable difference, I'll be ordering a XXX Full C-N-C...

I like my C-N-C XXX Full choke, it loves to throw the Winchester Supreme HV 3.5" #6's!
