    Default Remington \"Ventilator\" Choke

Does anyone have any experience with this choke? And do you know if you can shoot Hevishot throught it?

Our local walmart has all their chokes on sale and i was thinking of picking one up.

Mike I found this little bit of info on the Hevi Shot FAQ's page..

    WEB PAGE.... http://www.hevishot.com/faq.html

What after-market choke tubes are suitable for use with Hevi-Shot

Any choke tube that is manufactured from high-quality steel, such as stainless, should be acceptable for use with Hevi-Shot. Choke tube manufacturers such as Rhino, Patternmaster, Carlson's, Truglo and Trulock offer Turkey choke tubes that are suitable for use with Hevi-Shot.

It doesn't specifically mention the Remington Choke Tube, but I would say it would fall into the HIGH quality stell catagory....JMO

How much are they going for, If I may ask ??

That choke is for lead shot only. It can't shoot steel nor hevi-shot through it. It's a tighter choke than the Remington Super Full Turkey Choke. It's designed for turkey hunting specifically. The ventilation on it is to help gas discharge and reduce recoil. I never shot it, but I did look at it for my father's 12-gauge. They didn't have it in 20-gauge for me to use it on my gun. It's made to fit most Remington 12-gauge shotguns, specifically their 870 line, but they listed off a bunch of other lines too. The cheapest I seen it advertised at was around $25.00.

There was only 1 left and they had it marked at $20. Thanks for the info but who's Mike?

They do have a bunch of the regular remington chokes (imp, mod, full) and I think those were $10.

    SORRY Gary...

And MOON according to the hevi shot faqs page the hevi shot can also be shot through the lead only Remington Choke,,,

here's what they had to say...

    [ QUOTE ]
Hevi-Shot can produce cosmetic rub marks in barrels and chokes, simply a change in surface finish. Over an equal number of rounds, this rubbing is similar to that experienced with steel shot. Both materials create more choke strain than lead shot due to a more solid payload. With the Remington wad column, the Hevi-Shot pellets rest on a cushioned pad in the shot container that allows the pellets to flow better through the choke. In addition, the Remington Hevi-Shot shot container is much thicker than previous Hevi-Shot loaded rounds and that thickness minimizes pellet contact with the barrel or choke.

Under laboratory test conditions, Remington has fired in excess of 500 rounds through each Remington choke tube offered, including Ventilator (.655") and "lead only" full (.691") without any dimensional changes being encountered. With the limited number of rounds used in normal Turkey hunting, Remington's testing represents many lifetimes of reasonable gun use.

Ah well the Remington dealer I spoke with didn't recommend Hevi-Shot through that choke. Neither did the person from the Remington website that e-mailed me back when I asked this question to them awhile back when looking at this same choke tube.

Awww Darn, you caught that before my edit...

Interesting isn't it MOON.... 2 opposing reccomendations.... ,, but I will say this then.... I would have to go with Remington's reccommendation since they are the ones that manufactured this part... and would think that their testing would be more extensive, and why would they hinder thier sales if it was totally safe to use with hevi-shot....

Yes, it is interesting. However, like you, I'd go with Remington's recommendation. They said their only chokes that can be used with Hevi-Shot is the Hevi-Shot choke or any choke that is rated to shoot "steel and lead". Sadly that ventilated choke and the other turkey chokes are only rated for "lead only". I'd rather be safe than sorry if it was me. It may very well work through the chokes, like how Hevi-Shot said, however, if it did mess up the gun I doubt Remington would support fixing the under any of their warrenties due to the choke technically says "lead only".

$20 is a sweet deal for that choke though. I'd still get it and I'd try to pattern it with some nice lead shot such as some Winchester Supreme Turkey Loads.
